Hi
I am trying to find any information on my great grandmothers 2nd husband. I have their marriage certificate and it states:
24/5/1919- Walter Harrison- 37 years- Bachelor-No253616-driver-RFA-90 cathnor road Shepherds bush-Father- thomas Harrison (deceased)- gold miner.
I have no idea where Walter was born.
There is no service records available, however I have found some info from the Medal Roll Index, RFA 315B. From my research 315B was associated with the Northumbrian guneers.
I do know that between 1920 to 1921 he came to Australia. His wife Rosanna Harrison and his 4 step children came to Australia in 1921. They did not travel together.
I would greatly appreciate any information - births, baptism, census records on either Walter or Thomas Harrison. i have looked, but so far I have not been able to find anything.

Thanks
Di

Since posting this notice, I have found out that my research re Walter being assoicated with 315B, Northumbrian Gunner is incorrect.

Just for background:
Marriages Jun 1919
HARRISON Walter Lewis Hammersmith 1a 708
Lewis Rosanna Harrison Hammersmith 1a 708
What was Walter's occupation?
Thanks

His occupation at the time of the marriage is Driver RFA (Royal Field Artillery). His service records did not survive, so I am unable to use this resource to find out personal information about him. The Medal Roll Index did not have his Brigade/unit number on the record.
The only info I have is his father was Thomas Harrison a gold miner. I have looked at birth and cencus records, Walter Harrison born abt 1882, father Thomas, but as I do not know much about where gold mining was done in England from 1870 plus. I have not been able to find any records.
I do know Walter emmigrated to Australia between 1920 & 1921. I found a Mr Harrison 38 years old January 1921 Naldera, which landed in Melbourne Victoria. At the moment I have not been able to find any info about him from the Australian end. Rosanna and the children arrived in April 1921 on the Euripides. Walter did not meet them, he did not catch-up with them for many months, stayed for awhile and then left. I do not know if he stayed in Australia or went back to England. As I said I would appreciate any help.
Thanks

In the 1890s, there were gold rushes in Nome, Alaska, in the Klondike in Yukon Terr, and in Kalgoorlie WA. In view of where Walter winds up, I would opt for Kalgoorlie. By 1919, the rush is over, but there would still be gold being mined there. Even today, the nearby Paddington mine produces 140000 oz pa

The only gold mines that I have heard of in Britain are in Wales and I think there may have been a couple in Scotland on a smaller scale. Isn't it the Welsh Gold that is used for wedding rings for the Royal Family?

Hi Cherilyn, mgnv & rootgatherer
Sorry I have not replied earlier, went away for a few days, returned home with a good dose of the flu and as a result I have not been on the computer for the last few days.
Yes that is Rosanna's death.
Her children went by the name of Lewis.
Thomas Lewis, he stayed in Australia for awhile, then went back to England with his wife Gladys. I do not have any idea about the year he left.
Lillian Lewis, stayed in Australia
Edith Lewis, stayed in Australia
Ruth Lewis, stayed in Australia
When Walter came to Australia, he came to Melbourne 1st and at some stage he went to Queensland. This is what a distant family member has told me. Not sure if this information is correct.
I have tried to find Walters birth records through Ancestry - Walter Harrison, born abt 1882, father Thomas. There is a number of matches, however as I do not know what villages, towns relate to England, Wales, Scotland etc it is a challenge for me.
