If you go to his page on the Commonwealth War Graves site and click on Basra Memorial, there is more general information including the following.........

The Basra Memorial commemorates more than 40,500 members of the Commonwealth forces who died in the operations in Mesopotamia from the Autumn of 1914 to the end of August 1921 and whose graves are not known.

The Mesopotamia war was going on between 1914 and 1921. 80,000 men were casulties they were there to drive out the Turks and to protect the oilfields.(how sad - nothing changes) the Basra memorial is in Iraq, Mesopotamia was renamed Iraq at a later date.

This was 22 months after the end of the war (31/10/1918 vs Turkey) - my guess is if he were wounded during the war, they'ld have gotten him back home by then, not left him in Iraq, so I guess he died of disease or some accident. The only way to find out his c.o.d is to get his d.cert - there'll be no other useful info on it that's not on the CWGC site. You can get his d.cert from the GRO - it's an overseas event. When you say you have "the document details", does that mean you've gotten the GRO ref from FMP?

Do you have the Commonwealth War Graves record for him?

If not, details are here

RAYNER, FAIRBURN
Initials: F
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Manchester Regiment
Unit Text: 2nd Bn.
Age: 20
Date of Death: 29/08/1920
Service No: 3513513
Additional information: Son of Fairburn and Martha Rayner, of 34, Euclid St., Beswick, Manchester.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 31 and 64.
Memorial: BASRA MEMORIAL

You could search for his service records on the Ancestry website, but they may not have survived - lots didn't.

Also worth looking at the War Diary for his battalion to see what they were involved in at the time he died. He almost certainly won't be mentioned by name, but you'd get an idea of what was happening the day he died.

Some War Diaries are online at the Documentsonline site. If the relevant one isn't online, then it will be at the National Archives.
