Evan Hughes c1815

Denbighshire clanswoman

Denbighshire clanswoman Report 21 Aug 2010 10:38

Evan disappears from records after 1851 to reappear in 1871 census. He marries two women both called Ellen/Eleanor spelt various ways over time. The first he has at least three children with - Hugh, Catherine and Sinah and the second at least two Ellen and Jane. He lives at Penygaer, Llangwm (sometimes Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr) and this family home is taken up by his daughter and son-in law in due course.
Can anyone find him in 1861? I can't find the records for the house in that census. He would either be a widower - I think the first wife died c 1856 - or already married to the next wife.
I can find an Evan and Ellinor at Cefn Brith with five children but the dates for the couple are inconsistent as are the places of birth.
Any help with this or finding the death record for Ellen no 1 or marriage record for Evan's second Ellen would be superb.

How do you know that Eleanor and Ellen are not the same person ?

One of these could be Sinah's birth (you don't give a date).
Corwen covers llan-thingy !!

Not sure I quite understand the first answer - no the people at the Crown are not connected to my Hughes.

I'm specifically seeking help finding Evan and any of his family in 1961 (I have all his other appearances in the census). He's my great grandfather btw and I am related via a daughter from his second wife.

I'm reasonably confident the two wives are not one and the same because they have completely different dates of birth and my gt.grandmother is buried at Llangwm next to my grandma with further corresponding dates.
The dates for Sinah are useful but she was born 1840 - hence she is on the 1841 and 51 censuses. Can't find her in 1861 either - have tried search on first name alone in case she married but nothing seems to fit.

Thanks for your replies - much appreciated!

Ellen and Eleanor (various spellings) are indeed commonly interchanged (for a single person).

Have you looked at FreeBMD for marriages?

For Evan Hughes marrying El* 1837-1870 in Corwen reg dist, we have a marriage to an Elizabeth in 1846, and a possible marriage to an Elizabeth in 1870. So his first marriage must have been pre-registration, and no trace of a second marriage, unless I'm looking in the wrong place.

Have you identified the births of any of the children -- in order to get a birth certificate that would give the mother's name for a particular child?

A bit more info would have been helpful, for searching censuses for you, like the approx birthdates of various children.

JaneyCanuck Report 23 Aug 2010 16:22

For our info, 1851:

Evan Hughes 35 - born Llangwm c1816, farmer of 20 acres
Eleanor Hughes 39 - born Llangwm c1812
Catherine Hughes 13 - born Llanfihangel c1838
Sina W Hughes 11 - born Llanfihangel c1840

Civil Parish or Township: Maes Yr Odyn
Ecclesiastical parish: St Asaph
County/Island: Merionethshire
Country: Wales
Registration district: Corwen

Are you the person who corrected Sina to Sinah in November 2009 at Ancestry? If not, are you in touch with that person?

1871

Evan Hughes 54 - farmer of 30 acres
Eleanor Hughes 45
Jane Hughes 10
Eleanor Hughes 8

Civil parish: [Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr]
County/Island: Merionethshire
Country: Wales
Registration district: Corwen

Address in both cases Pengaer.

I'm not seeing "Ellen".

If you're going by the age difference for Eleanor from 1851 to 1871, I might not put too much stock in it.

for info:

Marriages Jun 1857

Widowed, hard times? Would have to try to rule this one out in previous/subsequent censuses.

1881 (It would really have helped if you had presented this info for us)

Spouse's name: Eleanor
Gender: Male
Where born: Llangwm, Denbighshire, Wales

Still not seeing an Ellen! And note, the daughter is Eleanor here, not Ellen.

JaneyCanuck Report 23 Aug 2010 18:14

1841 for good measure

Evan Hughes 25
Elinor Hughes 29
Hugh Hughes 5
Catherine Hughes 3
Sinah Hughes 10 Mo

Civil parish: Llanfihangel Glyn Y Myfyr
Hundred: Isaled
County/Island: Denbighshire
Registration district: Corwen

Births Sep 1840
Hughes Sinah Corwen 27 132

And that would give one wife's name.

The wife's age in 41 is consistent with 51. I still wouldn't rule her out as the wife in 71 and 81. People often got younger as they got older.

Births Sep 1864 ?
HUGHES Eleanor Anne Corwen 11b 411

But a death to investigate maybe:

Deaths Dec 1853
Hughes Eleanor Corwen 11b 26_

(you'd have to check the image for the page number)

I'm not seeing a later Eleanor Hughes death (post 1881) in Corwen reg dist to match her (one in 1895 aged 66 is too young really). Do you have her death? There are possibles as Ellen or Ellenor.

Denbighshire clanswoman

Denbighshire clanswoman Report 23 Aug 2010 18:22

First wife born surname Roberts around 1812 had children Hugh 1835, Catherine 1838 and Sinah 1840. The second was surname Jones and was born 28 Jan 1826. She can't be the first wife as she'd have been 11 on having Hugh so you have to trust me when I say there are two wives. They are both variously recorded as Eleanor and Ellen and Elin so I am not too transfixed on the spelling. How they appear on gravestones/parish records isn't always consistent either, nor in our family Bible.

Second family is Jane 1861 and Eleanor (again various spellings) 1863. There was also a Hugh in 1866 but he died in 1870 (this I am not 100% confident about).

Second marriage was Oct 8 1858 - I think Llanrwst registered.
The first marriage was before 1837 so isn't registered on the searchable databases.

I am happy to provide as much information as needed to support the tracking down of 1861 - I probably have most of it all ready, but this posting would be huge if I copy and paste all the records so far into a first sortee before anyone even showed an interest in helping. The ones you have are the correct ones.

Janey: I might have made that change on ancestry but I don't remember...I'll go and look at the record and see if it says I did it.

I do have to put stock in the age differences because it does not make sense on many levels for these women to be the same person. The place of birth is completely different too - Llangwm near Corwen isn't that close to Gwytherin which is nearer to Capel Garmon and Llanrwst.
