Hi all,

Trying to find Sarah Williams, born about 1828. I assume in or around Birmingham, Warwickshire, but perhaps not.

She had a son, Edwin Ryan born 25 April 1856 in the Workhouse, Birmingham. No father named on the birth certificate.

She appears on the 1861 Census with her son in the Turner household as visitors, in Birmingham, then aged 33 and son Edwin 5.

She appears on the 1871 Census in Birmingham (aged 44) with her son Edwin aged 14.

Edwin appears on the 1881 Census (without his mother) in Nottingham as a lodger aged 25.

What has happened to Sarah ? Did she remarry ? Did she die ?

We know Edwin married a French lady, Felicite Cochard in London in March 1888 and then migrated to Australia sometime before June 1889 when their son Edwin John was born in Parramatta, NSW.

Edwin was a tailor by trade. Would like to find any apprentice / indenture records for him, presumably in Birmingham, but perhaps not.

Edwin died in Moruya, NSW, Australia on 5 November 1898, of ptomaine poisoning caused by eating impure oysters.

We would also like to find what happened to Sarah.

All help appreciated.

Thanks
Robyn

Have you looked for a possible death on freebmd?

The age at death is on the index after the late 1860's.

Can we assume that you haven't located her in 1881?

Yes, thanks. I had the 1871 Census too.

I have looked for deaths between 1871 and 1891, but haven't found anything that fits. With such a common name, it's like looking for a needle in a haystack.

I have no idea of her parents' names, or even confirmation that she was actually born in Birmingham, that's just an assumption that I've made. She just turned up at the Workhouse. The first mention of her was the birth of Edwin in 1856 at the Workhouse in Birmingham.

Could she have gone to London with her son ?
Why weren't they together on the 1881 Census ?

Is there any way to track down tailor apprenticeships in Birmingham ?
Maybe there's some more details on his indentureship records (if there were any). I've googled it, but didn't come up with anything.

I am interested in Edwin John Williams, the son born in Sydney. He is my husband's grandfather. There seems to be a big gap in his life. What happened to him when his father died?

Also do you think that there is a possibily that the father of Edward Ryan Williams - his surname maybe Ryan?
