I am trying to find a birth for my grandfather. According to his army records he was born in Dundee in Scotland and his date of birth was 18 March 1882. On his marriage certificate his father is listed as Frederick John Mckay Licensed Victualler. I have tried various searches for him loads in fact. On his naval records he is listed as John Mckay so I am wondering if Frederick was added for reasons of I do not know of. Any help gratefully appreciated.

Hi Ann,

I can only find a Frederick McKay born 1881 in Arbirlot / Angus there doesn't appear to be any with that name born in Dundee between 1880-1883.
Can't seem to find the family either?

Kind regards,

Cathy

If Father and son had the same names it would get confusing at home, so maybe he was known as John ....

There's a John Frederick McKay born in 1880 in Glasgow....

My grandfather as I said at the top was listed on his marriage certificate as Frederick John Mckay. His father had the same name supposedly and was a licensed victualler. My grandfather at time of marriage was a stoker aboard a ship called HMS Formidable which was docked in Portsmouth at the time. The only Mckay on there who was a stoker was John Mckay according to naval records. I have no idea who his mother was. He died a long time ago. Neither my mum or any of her siblings are alive so I have nobody to ask.
