Julia Report 9 Sep 2010 08:37

Good Morning to All, Would someone please be kind enough to help me with this.
On the thread, 1234869, posted by Moonbi, at the bottom of this page, or just over onto the next, she has posted me a message in respect of my rellies, who are from in and around the same place as hers.
However, when I use the co-ordinates that she has given me, and can actually get onto the IGI site, it somes up as no matches. Although I am used to using that site, what am I doing wrong.
Many,many thanks

Thanks Gael, but I already use that site. I wanted to see what Moonbi was able to, and I am not.
Many Thanks

Hi Julia,

I am not quite sure what you want to do.

Can you tell us what Moonbi has told you to do and I will see if I can do it and find anything? Then we could perhaps work out what, if anything, you are doing wrong?

Thanks Dea, I just read what she put in her last posting on her thread. I bought up the IGI site, and put in the batch numbers, but it comes up as no match. As I understand from what she has said, these two batch numbers refer to Turners in Eye, Northnats, which is what I am looking for. I sometimes wonder, that she has different access to things, as I cannot always understand where she has her information from.
Again, many thanks.

Hi Julia,

I can't get anything from those numbers either but my first thought is that they look more like 'film numbers' than 'batch numbers'.

In my experience batch numbers have always had a letter in front of the numbers - often C or M (I think denote christenings and marriages)?

I think you will have to ask him/her to clarify for you how to follow it through?

I will have a further 'fiddle' and see if I can come up with anything.

Also - is she using the basic 'Morman site' for the IGI or the 'Hugh Wallis' site??

Dea, again many thanks for giving this your attention. I too have always been aware that the batch numbers are prefixed by a letter.
I will have to ask her to clarify her information, and wondered also if she was using the Hugh Wallace site, which I have never done, so do not know how it works.
I sometimes think she does not make things clear, ie. there was some confusion earlier on her thread, which made several of us think she was using CD's, rather than the actual IGI site available to us all. Her sources of information are not always available to us all, though I think this is what she thinks.
Again, many thanks

I have sent Moonbi a PM, asking here to return to here thread, and clarify what she has put. I may get a reply today, or it may be through the night, as she is in Australia
Many Thanks

hi moombi here

just read your queries and I guess you are right
I am a bit thin on my explanations
although I did presume from the start of my membership here that folk who offered help on GR were more used to using these sites than I am.
Even so, my explanation of how I went about getting this data for Eye that I referred Julia to, has now been posted on my thread in the Trying to find board called "Thomas Sutton......1789 Thorney etc

Best wishes

Thanks for the explanation Moonbi,

I knew how to do it from Jane Turner but I didn't have her name and was just working from the batch numbers you gave and it wouldn't give any results!

Now I have looked through from Jane I realise why! - The batch numbers you gave were 1013348 and 1013349 and that is where the problem lay - they should have started with the letter 'I' not the number '1' - 'I013348' and 'I013349' - then it would have worked !!

Anyway, that's the problem solved then!

Many thanks,

Hello Dea, sorry I could not get back to this thread. I was visited upon unannounced by teenage grandaughter. I have read Moonbi's explanation on her thread, and have read your reply on this one.
I use a quicker method to get into the IGI, than the one given by Moonbi, that is when the site is working for me.
I will now have a go at this during this afternoon.
Many thanks again for your imput.

Julia - Hugh Wallis IGI

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/

This is quite a good explanation of Hugh Wallis site

An easy shortcut to finding batch numbers for a specific parish is offered at Hugh Wallis' Web site, IGI Batch Numbers - British Isles and North America (United States, Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and the Channel Islands). He includes a link directly from each batch number to the search engine at FamilySearch...which can also save a bit of clicking and typing. If you want to use the advanced search features offered by FamilySearch, then copy the batch number and paste it directly into the IGI search page.

Guides to batch numbers for many other countries have also been created and put online by genealogists. Some such IGI Batch Number Web sites include:

* Batch Numbers de los paises latinoamericanos - IGI batch numbers for the countries of Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Peru and Mexico.
* Numéros de BATCHS pour le Pays Basque et la Navarre - Batch numbers for the Basque Country (Spain) and Navarre.
* IGI batchnummers van Nederland en België - IGI batch numbers for the Netherlands and Belgium
* IGI og VRI Batch-numre for Danmark, Norge og Sverige - Batch numbers for Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
* Les numéros de batch de l'IGI - Search the index or browse by département to find Batch Numbers for France.
* IGI Index: Deutsches Batchnummern Verzeichnis - Browse for your German town of interest to find batch numbers specific to Germany.
* Batch Numbers de Italia - IGI batch numbers for Italy.
* Mexico IGI batch numbers - More than 3579 batch numbers for 32 Mexican states have been added so far.
* Batch numbers de las parroquias españolas microfilmadas - IGI batch numbers for parishes in Spain.

I shouldn't have to tell you, but it always bears reminding. The IGI, as helpful as it is, is a collection of "extracted" records, which means that there will be some mistakes and overlooked records. It is best to follow up on events found in the IGI by viewing the original parish records, or microfilm copies of those records. Everything in the IGI is available via microfilm loan at your local Family History Center.
