I have hit a brick wall in my research into my paternal lineage and wonder if the wider community can help ?

William George Hutton was born c1857 somewhere in London. sometime between 1857 and 1879 he either emigrated to New Zealand or was transported there as a criminal. His rough birth date and place comes from a birth certificate of my grandad of 1886 that states his father was 29 at the time. He married a Sarah Ann Johnson in 1879 at Wanganui in New Zealand and their marriage certificate does not hold any parentage details at all.

Any help in finding the missing London connection would be most helpful.

Thanking you in anticipation

Thanks to you all

The Alverstoke one can be ruled out as that is in Hampshire and the copy of His sons birth certificate from down under clearly states that he was from London

The 1881 census can also be ruled out as by that time he was in New Zealand.

Whilst it is not unknown for christian names to be switched around I do not think that this has happened in this case.

However the 1861 census does look interesting and I had seen this on the FreeBMd site. Does the original entry by any chance have what the second initial might be and also what relationship are the two Jones's that are listed (possible mother in law and sister in law?)

Thanks again and if anyone looking at this in the future recognises any of the above then please message me.

Just thought that I had better add their children as I know that names can run in families and this might help to identify Williams siblings and parents a bit better.

Ann Elizabeth born 1880 in New Zealand
William Henry born 1881 in New Zealand
Sidney James born 1883 in Australia
Reginald Spencer born 1884 in Australia
Albert Ernest born 1886 in Australia
Edith Mary born 1888 in New Zealand
Kathleen Selina Alice born 1893 in New Zealand

Thanks again

Hi Rex, and welcome to GR - looks as if you have found a relative in Jaqueline. :-)

As she started this thread in Sep 2010, there is a chance that she won't realise there is another reply. It might be best if you send her a Personal Message (PM) by clicking on her name. Even if she is now a lapsed member, if she still has the same email address, she will be able to read your PM and reply.

Good luck

I would like to thank everyone for their contribution, it turned out to be a real detective story and would never have been sorted out without the help of Nadia.

It turns out that William George was actually born as a Harrison and changed his name later in life, presumably when he went to New Zealand. We know it is the same person by a number of other references/records that have been uncovered and prove beyond dispute that it is the same person. He took the name of his natural father despite his mother /father not being married and the birth was registered under the mothers name

Once again, thanks to everyone for your help

Jackie
