trying to find eny family of william jones born 1923 in ashton in makerfield he was my fathers brother and he disappered around 1945 possibly to scotland where he was once in the merchant navy would dearly love to find out what happened to him thank you

In particular, can you give his mother's and father's names?

His mother's surname might allow for his birth to be pinpointed. His birth certificate would give his exact date of birth. If he died after 1969 in England/Wales, his date of birth should be on his death record, and those records are searchable at Ancestry by date of birth.

The death certificate might give you a family member's name as the informant of death.

On the other hand, if he died in Scotland, deaths can be searched at ScotlandsPeople using mother's surname.

You have to register (free) and then go to Statutory Registers - Deaths. You do have to pay to see any results.

(People here have subscriptions to Ancestry, but SP is pay-per-view each time only, by buying credits.)

A quick free search at SP finds 52 deaths for the name William Jones born 1923 +/- two years, but more exact info could help.
