Can anyone point me in the right direction to find information on Alice Carter, all I know about her is she was the houskeeper to my G grandmothers husband who was Martin Charles Rhodes, Alice Carter gave evidence at the inquest into Martin Rhodes death and had identified his body she stated that she had been his houskeeper for 14 years and he was a general labourer, they lived at 9 Pollick Cottages, Hatton Road, Bedfont, Feltham. His wife Harriet Matilda Rhodes does not seen to be with him and she died in 1961 Percy House Isleworth,
Any help would be appreciated, I will have to pop back and forth to the boards today as my OH in in hospital so if you are kind enough to post a reply I am not ignoring you. Many thanks

Pam

Is this the death?

Martin C Rhodes 1948 Ealing Middlesex

I'm not sure how you can find out about her as you don't know how old she was. Perhaps you can look at the electoral rolls for the address and go backwards and forwards to see if she lived with him, or left the property? Of course, if he or she moved, that wouldn't be any good. It could be that she was just a caring neighbour.

It seems strange that a general labourer could afford a housekeeper. Have you looked for any births in the area with either Carter mmn Carter, or Rhodes mmn Carter?

Martin was 63 when he died so may not have had children with his "housekeeper". I think it quite possible that in this case "housekeeper" may be a polite way of describing Alice who was more likely to be his partner. As has been said, a General Labourer would probably not be able to afford a housekeeper - or a divorce and so not be free to remarry.

Did he make a will (to see who got any of his possessions) which could give further information.
