JR was married to an Ursula Ridsdale on 11. June 1615 in Swayfield, South Lincs. I am trying to find his parents. I have his father as a William (aka Thomas - or they may have been brothers) married to a Joanne Hull 10. November 1552. The grandfather I have as a Richard married to a Barbara Bruntson 18. January 1533. All marriages took place at St. Nicholas Church in Swayfield.

All this data came from the church records, and am now looking for secondary confirmation. I have been through the usual channels and am getting no further as there is conflicting information: e.g. 1 record says that Joanne Hull was married to Thomas and in another to William, Barbara Bruntson was married to Richard, but when I look at his records he is married to a Maragaret.

Can any one solve the mystery?

Thanks Gael from Downunder - that was quick! This is where the problems start. Have his surname as Reverson on one record (her banns) and also found him as Robunson. Ursula Ridsdale had as Ridsval. As all the church records were hand written it is often difficult to decipher and when more than one person enters data onto a computer their interpretations can be completely different.
On my birth certificate (original) my mothers maiden name is recorded as Cresswell (it was actually Castle - her birth cert). On subsequent documents e.g. my marriage cert. her name appears as Presswell. There are at least 20 variations of my surname. Thanks anyway.

Regards Michael

Congratulations for getting so far back without hitting a brickwall before now!

You said you 'Have been through the usual channels' does that mean you have looked other records apart from Parish Registers?.....Sometimes you may gain info that confirms a finding or leads you down another avenue that helps.

Hi Chris in Sussex,

The parish records were looked into by my father before the invention of the internet! Both my sister and myself have been researching for over 40 years and by the usual channels I mean the GR, Ancestry, Family Search, the peerage, etc. In addition have contacted the Lord Mayors Office in York and have been supplied with a new avenue to follow - means a visit to York though! All the data I have on my tree has been confirmed from at least 2 different sources back to roughly 1550. Now trying to confirm the info back to 1480, where the 'brickwall' is.
Many thanks. Michael

Hi Ann of Green Gables,

Many thanks for all the data. Has given me a new lead or avenue to explore. Extremely greatful to you. Handwriting is the worse problem to overcome, as records from different sources are never the same and with so many variations to a name it is often difficult to ascertain if you are on the right track.

Regards

Michael
