Find Ancestors

Can anyone please help I am struggling to find the death record of my gr-gr uncle who was born in St Davids Pembrokeshire in 1818 and he married my gr-gr aunt Elizabeth Vaughan in Fishguard in 1863 and up until the 1881 census they lived Tanymynydd farm,Llanwnda, Pembrokeshire, in the 1891 census Elizabeth was down as widow and living in Fishguard so Lewis died sometime between 1881 and 1891.
I have searched the Free BMD and records on Findmypast and I have found the death record of Elizabeth but have not come up with anything for Lewis so I would appreciate any help as there must be a record there somewhere.

Have you tried ancestry and also variations of spellings of surname

I appreciate your reply Amanda but this is unlikely as Llandovery is not in the County of Pembrokeshire where he was a farmer.

What age does he give on his marriage certificate ?
Was he really 24 years older than his wife? (ages on census are not always correct)

yes there was a big age difference, Lewis had been married before and on his marriage cert his age was down as 42 and Elizabeth was 20 but it seems strange that I cant find a death record for Lewis.

Hi everyone, sorry to be a pain but I dont seem to be getting much response on this request,. so I thought I would give it one last go.
I am pulling my hair out here and not getting anywhere.

Maybe, just maybe, he died before the census was taken but only registered afterwards , as this is the only one I can see which roughly matches his age (which was never consistent) ... and is the right area.

Llandovery was the reg district for Llanwnda.

The death record for your Lewis is certainly “elusive”. Even a quick check of the probate and death duty registers reveals no obvious candidates.

I note that in 1891, Tanymynydd ( the farm occupied by Lewis and Eliazabeth in 1881) was occupied by Thomas Vaughan – possibly a relative of Elizabeth?

Thomas had several children some of whom were born in Fishguard, others in Llanwnda. Margaret L. Vaughan aged 9 is shown as being born in Fishguard and John William aged 8 is shown as being born in Llanwnda.

The possible relevant birth records are as follows:

Births Jun 1881
VAUGHAN Margaret Lizzie Haverfordwest 11a 981

Births Jun 1883
Vaughan John William Haverfordwest 11a 990

Bearing in mind that in 1881 Thomas had a farm in Fishguard, this could indicate (only “could”, mind you!) that Thomas Vaughan took over Tanymynydd between 1881 and 1883, perhaps following the death of Lewis.

Since these events are fairly soon after the 1881 census in which Lewis features, it could also suggest that Lewis died in Llanwnda at some time between 1881 and 1883.

If so this would narrow the search parameters for Lewis’s death but it seems odd that we cannot find a death record.

I realise that this may not be too much help but Pembrokeshire Record Office, who seem to hold the parish records for Lanwnda, might be able to help you – if only to eliminate possibilities.

Thanks Mike for your info I certainly did not realize that Llandovery was the reg district for Llanwnda as Llandovery is outside the county, therefore I will have to order a death cert and see what comes up.

Thanks for your time Rotals this information tallies with the information I have, but I have had info that there could be a Lewis Roberts died in Llandovery area in Sept 1891 so first I am going to order a death cert for this one and if that fails I will have to try the Pembs Records Office,
I will have to keep my fingers crossed that one of these will sort it out.

It seems that there are 2 places called Llanwnda: one in Pembrokeshire and one in Caernarvonshire.

Llandovery Registration District (Carmarthenshire) includes LLANWRDA.

Therefore it will have to be a trip to the Records Office and try my luck there,

It is difficult to understand why the death of Lewis should be registered in Llandovery Registration District but it does remain a possibility so it is probably worth bearing in mind.
