Pypes Hall School

Pypes Hall School, Birmingham -- does it ring a bell with anyone?
Trying to track down my grandfather George Williams, born 1856 who apparently went there at some time in his life. It was a manor house, used as a school for some time after 1850. I know about his life after 1878 when he married, but cannot find anything else other than the school.

Some mention of Pype Hayes Hall in this link: http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=22962

Are you trying to trace where he was other than at the school?

Do you know who his parents were?

Barbara -- thanks for that. I've signed up with the Birmingham History Forum -- if someone there doesn't have an answer I don't know who would! Marjorie

Anne-Marie -- thank you for your reply. The problem with my grandfather is that I have no real information prior to a marriage in 1878 but a note I'd scribbled down from an aunt a few years ago mentioned he was at the school, so I have now signed up with the Birmingham History Forum. Marjorie

Marjorie, have you already asked people to look for your grandfather prior to marriage? If not let us know and we can give it a shot!

brummiejan -- I just feel gloomy, looking for Williams's. My grandfather, George Frederick Williams married Amy Dixon in Shrewsbury in August 1878. His fathers name was given as John Williams, wine merchant. All census records have him born in Welshpool but his age varies. However I believe the age given on the marriage cert, 22, is most likely to be the correct one, which makes him born circa 1856.
Family legend is scant -- he spoke fluent Welsh, knew Latin and was educated at Pypes Hall School.
Any path you can guide me onto would be much appreciated. Marjorie

You are all quite brilliant. My poor grandpa, whom I thought to be a wife deserter was clearly himself deserted!
In 1901 George Frederick turns up in Lambeth with a wife called Hilda -- but this name is a mistake. He will live for the next 35 years with my grandmother, Sarah Gittins, who calls herself Sarah Williams (no record of any marriage). In 1901 my father, James Frederick Williams is a babe in arms.
Sarah had given birth to him in Shropshire and then joined grandfather. No idea why the name Hilda was on the census form rather than Sarah.
George Frederick Williams died in Birmingham in 1935.
No-one in his family knew anything about his past other than " he went to Pypes Hall School, he spoke fluent Welsh and knew Latin".
They go on to have five more children, none of whom had any idea their father had been married before or they had two half-siblings.
The witness names on the 1878 wedding certificate were Mary Humpreys and Thomas Evan x his mark.
I do appreciate all of this. Marjorie

brummiejan -- I had a horrible feeling they might have gone to ground and somehow escaped the 1911 census -- I was hoping for a lot from that.
In the 1901 census it has to be my grandmother, born in 1872 who for some reason gave her name as Hilda -- she did have an illegitimate child about ten years earlier she called Hilda -- maybe she just likes the name!
But how can I find where grandpa came from -- or is he lost to me forever.
