Is the niece who was present at his death still alive? Or can you trace her family ? They may know something -or have you tried to see if there was a criminal trial for bigamy?

Thanks Gillian.
I absolutely agree with you. It looks as if I have hit a 'brick wall' in this particular case!

And David Malpas is alive and well in 1891 and 1901 and still shows himself as married ! So unless she obtained a divorce which was pretty much unheard of in those days for the lower orders, the marriage to Charles was bigamous
I have tried just searching for Emily born Stelling 1857 but no joy in 1901. Nor as Malpas. If she was that devious she could have taken any name at all

Hello Anne-Marie,
Both David Malpas & Emily are shown as lodging in Thanet in the 1881 census. He is shown as being born in Margate, Kent and aged 26 (born ca 1855).
Thanks for your note.

I am trying to find the eventual fate of my great-aunt Emily Wood, born in Stelling, Kent on 17 Mar 1857, the daughter of James Wood (a farmer) and Mary Woolett.
Emily first married a David Malpas reg. in Thanet in Q/E Jun 1877 and remarried my great-uncle CHARLES WESTBURY in Woolwich on 11 Dec 1882 and the marriage certificate describes her (quite dubiously, I think) as a Widow.
She appears in the 1891 census, aged 34, living with her husband in Kidderminster, Worcs but there is no trace of her in either the 1901 or 1911 censuses and I'm also unable to find a death registration for an Emily Westbury after the 1891 census was taken. They had no children.
My great-uncle appears in both the 1901 & 1911 censuses but without his wife and he eventually died in Kidderminster on
6 Jun 1924 and his neice is shown on the death certificate as being present at the time of his death.
Emily's disappearance is a complete mystery to me and I would greatly appreciate any assistance in discovering her eventual fate.
