Find Ancestors

Trying to find the parents of John Martin (b1758) in Hutton Berwickshire, Scotland.

Tried searching in the area but can't find anything which matches. I think his fathers name will be James Martin. Don't know if I should try searching South of the Border?

Can anyone help?

found him on family search, his christening was 17/12/1758 with james as his father in hutton as you said

also according to the same site james married 06 NOV 1757 Hutton, Berwick, Scotland
although no name was given for his wife

The marriage for 1757 is on Scotlandspeople

Under Old Parish Records.

Might be worth having a look to see for yourself what the original image shows.

I've never come across this type of Marriage/Banns record before ... where the spouse's name is not recorded.

Yes, I have usually always found the spouse's name, but this is a mystery.

unless you have never used family search before you would expect it to contain the spouses name, this isnt the case on family search, it is not a type of marriage/banns record. it relies enterirly on people copying out the millions of records and contributions from its many users, some of which are unreliable of course, and family search is never to be taken as actual fact. unless you have further info that colaberates.

what helen didnt inform you was that to actually see the info held on scotlandspeople you have to buy credits, which isnt a great deal of cash and considering that you get to use them also for immediate copies of certificates, can also amount to a fair amount unless you have made absolutely sure you have the correct person. believe me i have used this site, and while its good to get them within 2 mins rather than waiting weeks, you do have to be very sure what you are downloading

In this case, the marriage details on Familysearch for James Martin are taken from an extracted record as opposed to a submitted record ... so should be an exact copy of the original information from the marriage/banns record.

My thoughts were possibly the spouse's name may have been on the original record but difficult to decipher ... and so were left off the familysearch information.

Unfortunately, sometimes we have to speculate to accumulate .. and the only way to find the answer to this query is to download the image from Scotlandspeople, should you choose to do so.

However, I don't know how you would be able to verify that this James Martin is definitely the father to John Martin.

Of course, verifiying definite connections as opposed to possible connections from multiple sources is a time consuming and sometimes costly exercise.

Just tried the Scotlands People website and I don't think it's the right James Martin. Most of the Martin family in question are from Berwickshire and that James Martin is from Perthshire.

Back to the drawing board.
