thanks everyone seems a bit of a mystery all round, Kay would he still be on an orphanage record even if he wasnt in one, and thanks for the John tip. Sorry Mike not correct one but Maryb and S.Lass had the right ones. Looking into Willian and Hannah to see if it gives me anything. Thanks all

Kay????

Kay???? Report 27 Oct 2010 19:37

If the information is from the orphanage records??, regards Williams Hills father then-William Scruton may well be named as the father and could have been made to contribute to his keep there,,,,,,but there was never a marriage between Mary and him...also---**John** is the most given name on marriage certificates for illigitimate children..it looked respectable.

There maybe records for an order against William Scruton,or in the actual admittance orphanage records at RO/Archive Durham. worth checking if possible.

If William junior was registered as Hill (same as his mother) then it looks like the parents weren't married.

I'am more curious as to where Williams middle name is from.
It usually comes from either parents mothers maiden name.

I have been through the 1871 census for Ferry Hill but no luck.

1871 William Scrutton in Swinefleet near Goole.

Maybe Mary Jane came from elsewhere other than Durham.

William and hannah Robinson are there though.

I'am running out of ideas.

Hello Mary, i dont know anything about William Scruton or Mary Jane Hill except what is on William s Hill's birth cert. Am guessing the year of death as 1880 cause in 1881 census William S Hill was an orphan. Any ideas were to look.

Mary Report 27 Oct 2010 15:53

Could it be this William Scrutton.

William Jennings Scrutton born howden 1852.
on the census records he was born Cotness yorks and was a shoemaker.
he married in beverley on 1878 to Frances Brighsm she died 1884
He also married in beverley 1885 to Ruth Ianson they had 8 childre by 1901.
He also was in Swinefleet on 1871 census.

No sign of him being married to Mary Jane Hill.
Did she die in 1880 under the name Hill or Scrutton?
