Coopers!

;)

Choccy (why is she PMing??) has Phoebe Jr's death.

Can you clarify what you're after? Origins of Phoebe Jr's parents, and/or deaths / census 1841/after 1861?

That "possible connection" in 1841:

Name: Thomas Cooper
Age: 62
Estimated birth year: abt 1779
occupation: laboror
place of birth: not born in county

Name: Sarah Cooper
Age: 61
Estimated birth year: abt 1780
Where born: Suffolk, England

Civil Parish: St Mary
Hundred: Bury St Edmunds
County/Island: Suffolk
Registration district: Bury St Edmunds

Wondered whether "not born in county" might really have meant "foreign parts".

There doesn't seem to be a Ph*e or Ph*y or C*er in St Mary in 1841 to match Phoebe Cooper Sr.

Thank you JC

Choccy posted on my testing thread yesterday when I had trouble posting.
I have sent it to John Minter of the Minter Exchange and he thinks it looks very promising.

I am looking to find out more on John Cooper ans his origens. !861 on FMP and Ancestry says South Carolina as does IGI.

Looks like the one in Gaol 1841 is not mine then.

Just fyi, I searched in Surrey because that's where Phoebe Jr married and where she was in 1841. The elders seem to have returned to Suffolk after that, from what you have above.

Have you looked at very early US censuses?

1810 shows only heads of household, of course.

In Laurens, SC, there are:

David Cooper Laurens, South Carolina
Freemon [Truman] Cooper Laurens, South Carolina
Jacob Cooper Laurens, South Carolina (with slaves)
Joseph Cooper Laurens, South Carolina
Rosanah Cooper Laurens, South Carolina
Wm Brown Cooper Laurens, South Carolina

In 1800 there are also

Benjamin Cooper Laurens District, South Carolina
Samuel Cooper Laurens District, South Carolina
(plus Jacob and Joseph)

I don't pay to see any other details, so I don't know whether an occupation would be stated. From the sample standard image, it looks like not. (Just thinking that coach painter could be an inherited occupation.)

You know there's one person at GR with a Cooper born in Laurens County? -- John 1859.

You need to put yours in your tree. ;)

LadyKira

LadyKira Report 22 Nov 2010 01:58

1796 and 1859? well I will contact him.
I have looked at the census returns but they do not show occupations. pity.

What is the lilkihood of someone in a rural village of that time even knowing of a town called Laurens in South Carolina?

Will sleep on it now. Back tomorrow night.
