John Jones - b England 1814 - d Australia 1854

Could somebody please help me, I am looking for information on John Jones who was born in England in 1814 and died in Victoria Australia on 6/11/1854 - ref 1824.

He was married on 1/1/1848 in St Johns Church of England in Launceston Tasmania to Elizabeth Lucas, daughter of James Lucas and Elizabeth Murray, both from noted convict families.

They had three children, James 1849, Jane 1851 and John 1854.

I believe that John Jones 1814 came to Australia under the Bounty Scheme but I haven’t been able to find a reference to him. As he married in 1848 it would have been before then. One reference to the Bounty Scheme was 1841 but not sure how long it lasted.

Would anybody be able to find a reference to him coming to Australia – I know that a name like John Jones, place of birth unknown, is a bit impossible, but some of you can work miracles!

Sorry to get back to you all late. Problems with Australian v England times - I had to make and eat lunch.

I think the John Jones and Elizabeth Lucas dates you have are for different people - poor John died young and Elizabeth remarried, had several more children and died in 1870.

The Bounty scheme was different to the convicts as it was a scheme to help populate Australia and Bounty immigrants were free immigrants whose passage was paid by the colonial government. An incentive or reward (i.e. bounty) was paid to recruiting agents in Britain to find suitable skilled labour and tradespeople, then ship them out to the new colony. The typical bounty was 19 pound ($38) for an adult and 5 pound for a child.

I'll try Tony OZ as he might have some suggestions.
