It's been six weeks with not a word of response from Karen, Linda, but who knows, maybe your post will be the magic number. ;)

Have you tried missing off the K. A lot of old census records don't have a K so wont come up in your searches.

There are two Alice Benham-s born 1891-1897 in Hampshire in 1911. One is Alice Laura, and the other is:

SHIPPING BENHAM ALICE 1892 19 Havant Hampshire

Nope, deleted tracing of wrong Alice.

Again, with the info from the Davies-Benham marriage certificate, we'd know who Alice's father was, and I wouldn't have been guessing.

Right. You have Alice in your tree as born 1896, Petersfield. If that's correct, this is the household in 1901 in Bighton, Alresford reg dist, Hampshire:

James Benham 36
Elizabeth Benham 38
Daniel Benham 12
Elizabeth Benham 10
James Benham 5
Alice Benham 3
Louisa Benham 1

In 1911, the household is in Midhurst, Sussex, with more children:

BENHAM CHARLES 1910 1
BENHAM FRANK 1907 4

but Alice is not with them. ? Ah, but she is in Midhurst: (I'm doing free search, so I'm casting about with wildcard searches -- she's in a household with Alice Kelly, aged 52, where she is a servant.)

BENHAM ALICE 1897 14 Midhurst Sussex

What I'm getting at is -- have you searched trees here at GR for any of her siblings?

You have Louisa 1900 in your tree; one other member does as well.

You have Daniel 1889, Old Alresford, in your tree; someone else (who seems to be a direct Benham descendant) has Daniel 1890, Old Alresford. (The birth was registered Q1 1890.)

You have Alice 1896, Petersfield. Two people have Alice 1897, Steep -- the birth was registered Q1 1897, and Steep is in Petersfield reg dist.

(One of those people I have in my contacts list because in early 2008 I sent them a message about a thread asking about the person's great-grandmother in which a name wasn't given, but I didn't note the thread and I didn't get a reply, so I have no idea what it was about!)

Anyhow, what I'm getting at is: are you in touch with the other GR members who have Alice's siblings in their trees? Some family member of hers might know something about her remarriage.

These must be the daughters (Davies-Benham births, two are Iris and Violet) -- Alresford is the reg dist for Bishops Sutton.

Births Dec 1919 Alresford 2c 365

Births Jun 1922 Pontypridd 11a 1103

Births Sep 1925 ? Alresford 2c 294

There isn't a 1918 Davies-Benham birth. Have you searched at FreeBMD for the births?

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

For ref:

Marriages Mar 1917
BENHAM Alice Davies Alresford
Davies Frederick Benham Alresford 2c 299

Could the birth have been before the marriage, and registered as Benham? If Fred was posted abroad and the marriage wasn't possible until after the birth, for instance. There's a MarQ 1916 birth in Christchurch I wonder about, for instance -- there's no further record (birth/death) for the name.

Is Bishops Sutton somewhere he might have been because he was in the military in WWI?

Where did the daughters marry? This could help place Fred's death / Alice's remarriage geographically.

Karen, can you give all the info from the marriage certificate?

Presumably you're taking his DOB from his age at marriage -- 26?

What was his father's occupation stated to be? That's important, for searching for him in censuses, to see whether there's a match. What were the witnesses' names?

We understand what you're looking for.

The thing is that having *all* the information you have is necessary, even if it seems to you not to be directly related to what you're looking for, because the search can involve going backwards and sideways sometime, and every bit of data can help.

To reply in the thread here, please just use the box at the bottom, so everyone can see the info.

Hit a brick wall.
Frederick john Davies seems to have gone by the name of john.
His father was William Davies b approx 1870's estimated guess.
Frederick married in 1917 to an Alice Benham in Bishops Sutton, Hampshire. HThey had at least two possibly three daughters. two of them were named Violet b 1919 and Iris b? There was a daughter born in 1918 too.
Frederick according to one of their daughters marriage cert reads that Fred died before 1942. At the time of his marriage he was a privat in the army but then according to his daughters birth cert in 1919 it shows him as a labourer.
His wife Alice Davies (nee Benham) remarried and moved to Germany. Not sure whether she married a german or what.

I have tried looking for a Frederick john Davies and William Davies.
I cant seemed to find a birth cert for Fred.
But would love to know what both happened to Fred and his wife Alice Davies and who she remarried to.
Please can anyone help?
