The owner of the Smith/Parret tree seems to be the great grandaughter of Frederick Coombs/John Ufton.

It might be worth Brian getting a free trial at Ancestry so he can make contact and see the tree.

Brian - if you do that YOU MdUST MAKE SURE you cancel the free trial in time , otherwise you will get charge for a full sub.

The Smith/parrot tree states he was born John William Ufton. He was dismissed from the army and changed his name before enlisting in a different regiment.

Several trees on ancestry suggest that he is the son of Stanfield Ufton but one has a copy of the marriage certificate which shows the father was Frederick Coombs.

Edit Frederick was a Fitter.

After a long time of searching I have at last discovered this wonderful watched threads web site, At 84 I am afraid I still have trouble with modern electronics despite of being an ex RAF radar engineer.
Many thanks to all the help and info you have all been able to give me and I am sure I will now be able to solve the mystery of Frederick Coombs.
I will now get down to reading all the info and promise to relate back the outcome.
I have been unable to obtain any official docs apart from my mothers marriage certificate and Fredericks death certificate which do not give me names of his parents. :-D

Brian & all helpers..

Allow some flexability in the surname

I have been searching for my "Coombe" relatives for a number of years and have found the surname spelt several different ways.... Coombe, Coombs, Combes... etc....

Received (some time ago, sorry, do not always read personal pm's for some time):
I do have my grandfathers marriage cert and it gives his fathers name as Frederick. However other info I received lead me to believe it could well have been Barnard or Bernard.

Asenath is mentioned in Genesis, as a female.
Probably best to wait for Brian to reply/get the marriage certificate.

Added:
Asenath Coombs is a female servant in 1891 census.

The Aseurth Coombs on the 1881 census is listed as Asanath Coombs in the Births Index

Name: Asanath Coombs
Year of Registration: 1875
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: Radford
County: Nottinghamshire

This seems a rather strange forename - is it in fact Augustus?

No births for F.A. Coombs
Suspect his mother married after he was born.

Only 2 records for Frederick Augustus in Nottinghamshire at that time.

Births Mar 1874
Lovett Frederick Augustus - Loughbro' 7a 131

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Jun 1875
Taylor Frederick Augustus - Nottingham 7b 308

Can't see a Coombs/Lovett marriage but there are Coombs/Taylor marriages.
------------------------------------------

IF and I stress IF, the theory is correct, there is this entry in 1881 .............and I can find no birth registered in the name of Frederick Gustavias so maybe it should be Augustus.

Hello Brian - this may be the family information for Frederick on the 1881 census - the original image is far from clear and has been mistranscribed.

The registration district and year of birth fit, althogh Frederick is recorded as a daughter, not a son.

Name: Barnard Coombs
Age: 32
Estimated birth year: abt 1849
Relation: Head
Spouse's name: Jane Coombs
Gender: Male
Where born: Radford, Nottinghamshire, England

Civil Parish: Radford
County/Island: Nottinghamshire
Country: England

Street address: 6 Hubert St
Condition as to marriage: Married
Education:

Employment status:

Occupation: White Smith

Registration district: Nottingham
Sub-registration district: Hyson Green
ED, institution, or vessel: 4
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members:
Name Age
Barnard Coombs 32
Jane Coombs 30
Annie Coombs 8
Aseurth Coombs 6
Barnard Coombs 2

Based on this, parent names are Barnard ( possibly Bernard ) and Jane.

I have found the youngest son on the 1891 census listed as Bernard. I will keep looking on there for more.

I am assuming you do not have the marriage certificate as you assumed the wrong year. Once you have the certificate you will have his Father's name, and then we have more chance of finding him in the censuses.
