I have established that my family (Carter) orginated from an area around a village could Shipbourne in kent, which is about 4miles NE of Tonbridge. They were mostly farm labourers and worked on the local estate and until the 1880s when they started to move away from the area to look for other work. the last known family member that i am aware that still lived locally was a Lewin Carter and his wife Francis and their children, this i have gleened from the 1911 census.
Is there anybody out there that has any idea what happened to this family and do any of the extended family still live nearby. Any info would be of great help in my researches petmar

Dear Katie, thank you very much for the info supplied regarding the deaths of both Lewin and Francis, i did not have that info to hand and so i will now beable to fill in some blank spaces on my tree. He was by the way a Great-Uncle, that is the brother to my G. Grandfather, Henry George Carter 1861-1905
Lewin and Francis had a number of children and i wonder if any of them remained in the area to marry and have a family. Petmar

Hi There Ann of green gables, firstly, thank you for the info supplied most interesting, as regards the 1881 census, i do have that info as John (Jonathan) Carter 1835-1913 was my G.G.Grandfather. Now as regards the building of the "Corn Mill" by Eliza Carter 1836, iwas not aware of this lady and i wonder what part of my family in that area she belonged to, as i have researed back to before 1800 when my my G.G.G.Grandfather was born and i did not discover this particular person, of course she could well be part of the extended family of that time which i have know knowledge of. The estate you refer to at Dunks Green i think was called "Fairlawnes" and the Cazalet family made quite contribution to the area around Shipbourne and of course the estate was a very good sourse of employment in the area. I am very surprised to see that a member of the Carter family married into the Cazalets. The names of the two ladies mentioned, Eleanor, and Elizabeth Carter are not ones that i have come across as yet, do you have any dates to tie in with these names as i might beable to cross check on my tree for some clues to their connection to me. Yours Petmar.

I chose to look for Lewin as Carter is too common a name but Lewin narrows down the possibilites.

You can search online at freebmd for records after 1837

Lewin and Lulu were the easy ones to look for as their first names were more unusual. The death I found was from Ancestry, a subscription site. Deaths before c1940 can be found on http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl which is free to use. Looking for the others will take longer due to their relatively common names.
