I am trying to find the parents and any siblings of George William Hill, born in Portsea circa 1852. I have found all about his wives and children, I would just like to take this line back as best I can. He is shown as married in the 1881 census so I've been looking at cencus information prior to then, but I cannot seem to find him
Regards
Rhys

I have him married to an Elizabeth Johnson. He had 4 children, one born in Ireland, two in India and the last in Scotland, but he settled in Bridgend in Wales after that.
He was in the army, so his father could have also been military, but does that link with Portsea?

So why not give the information you have in the first place, as the instructions say to do? You have his wives' names, etc. etc. etc. Nobody else does.
Did Jan just waste her time? You haven't even responded to anything she posted.
How about what Flick said? Have you identified one of his marriages, and got the marriage certificate to learn his father's name? You "have him" married to Elizabeth Johnson -- from an actual record somewhere?
Unless and until you give some details -- e.g. post a census record for the household -- there doesn't seem much point in anyone continuing to guess.

Since this is the only GWH birth anywhere near Portsea anytime around 1851-3
Births Sep 1852 HILL George William Portsea 2b 372
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
it would seem quite likely to be him. A match with the father's name on a marriage certificate would confirm or deny.
Maybe you hadn't serched at FreeBMD ...

The 1861 household Jan posted is most likely, I think.
George Hill 31 - caulker, dockyard Ann Hill 29 Ann Hill 12 Sarah Hill 10 George Hill 8 - born Southampton Elizabeth Hill 4 Alfred Hill 3 Harry Hill 1 Edmond Chippeston 10 Walter Chippeston 8 in Portsea
Another possibility in 1861, if he wasn't actually born in Portsea but thought he was (Landport = Portsea):
Emma Hill 33 - seaman's wife, born Landport Emma Hill 16 - born Landport Ann Hill 13 - born Landport John Hill 9 - born Landport George Hill 7 - born London Alfred Hill 3 - born London in Portsea
(Usually children are recorded as "scholar" -- these last 3 are "uneducated"!)
For the George Hill/Kill Jan posted above -- an Ancestry user has corrected the name from Hill to Kill, and said only that it was a mistranscription. No way of knowing whether that person knows something, or just thought they could read the image better after randomly encountering it. However, there was a George Kill registered Q3 1851 Portsea, so I think that rules that one out.
