Many thanks for all your help.
I have now located a number of TOWNEND families living in Flush, Liversedge, and the surrounding area, on the 1841 through to the 1881 census and think I can lay claim to them all. One branch of the tree also had raher unusual christian names (unusual in my tree) such as Jackson TOWNEND and Brearley TOWNEND and this has, therefore, made it so much easier. I can therefore get quite far sideways and now just have to work backwards.

Am already a member of Huddersfield and Dist FHS but, looking at coverage, may be pertinent for me to also join Bradford as both cover the area I am researching. Records seem to be held at Wakefield but, according to their website, they are now closed until 4 January (the day I also return to work!!!!!). Ah well

Yes, these are indeed William and Betty (Elizabeth's) children, I have them on the census records I have. However, I do not think that this is William's baptism as, with the age he gives on the census records, he would appear to have been born around 1798.

Yes, this is them. I have the census entries for the household from 1841 up until William's death on 1 May 1879 but can find nothing prior to 1841 other than their marriage on 24 Dec 1818 - I have hit a brick wall as regards getting back any further

I am trying to get further back than my gt-gt-gt-grandfather, William TOWNEND, who lived at 47 Flush, Liveredge, W Yorkshire (1841 and 1861 census) with his wife Betty (sometimes Elizabeth). Her surname was KELLEY (but appears as Kelly on some records). Know KELLEY is correct as her borther, George Kelley, is the executor of William Townend's will.
William and Betty were married on 24 Dec 1818 at St Peter's, Birstall, but the two witnesses seem to be witnesses at a great number of marriages there.
Have been unable to get back any further (pre civil registration) as yet. Any help (or anyone researching the same family) very gratefully appreciated.
