Wonder what "grandfather came Yorkshire"means?

It looks right with the census Flick, maybe he was a ships carpenter?

Flick

Flick Report 30 Dec 2010 15:25

'Mariner' would explain his absence in 1871

Perhaps he was a Ship's Carpenter?

Or he changed his occupation by 1888...........

All the census info certainly indicates a birth in late 1865.......not late 1866

Flick

Flick Report 30 Dec 2010 15:26

I think it should read 'came FROM Yorkshire'

Thanks for that info, great help - I spent ages looking many times before but got in a panic at the time with so many names coming up and also at that time the credits ran out so quickly but I see the credit system is better now.

FannyByGaslight Report 30 Dec 2010 15:32

We dont use credits Cleo,we both have subs to Find my Past or Ancestry..Credits are far more expensive..

Yes, it was that my grandfather came from Yorkshire. He came down to London to Join the police force and must have met Mary Ann King then because he was based in Southwark but previously I could not even find out where she was born as there were so many Mary Ann King's when I looked. Thanks again, you have encouraged me to begin again with this part of my tree as I have managed to trace Charles HE Lightfoot family back to Pickhill Yorkshire in 1800's. Ta!

Do you mean you have the Platinum membership or whatever its called?

Cleo

Cleo Report 30 Dec 2010 15:40

Oh just noticed that bit about records searches being free on about 3 sites too.

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 30 Dec 2010 15:43

No,we do not use Genes records as they do not hold any ,they just send you to Find my past...

http://www.findmypast.co.uk

So I subscribe to that as do many on here..Or Ancestry.

ancestry.co.uk

Either are far better than anything Genes offer, although Find my Past is a sister company of Genes.

I would never even consider having anything other than BASIC membership on GR.

I use Ancestry.......plus the FMP 1911

The search options on other sites are far superior, and the annual sub allows UNLIMITED searches.

Thanks so much, I can't quite believe all the information in such a short time, it will take me a while to sift through it. And thanks for the other sites. I did try the month free on Ancestry and it was very good but being a pensioner I cannot really afford the monthly payments but I am going to look into it all now as I have lots of work to do for my sons' on their ancestors too. I got quite a long way many years ago with Lightfoot (before the internet) and found a cousin I did not know I had. My sisters and me had no info at all and did not even know our dad had so many sisters but the cousin helped a lot and even had photos. It all makes me and my sisters a bit tearful even now. Thanks again.
