It's much easier now that all the discharge papers are on FindMyPast! Not all the earlier records were filed alphabeticaly so were much harder, or in some cases, impossible, to find!

That's interesting annielaurie. thank you. I wondered when grandfathers records would show or even if !!. I did get then from Kew on one of my family history soc trips and as a bonus got his brothers too as they are filed alphabetically.
Theres always new things to learn in this hobby .lol

Only those who were discharged to pension up to 1854 are name indexed on the National Archives site.

More recent records won't be found on their website which is why I suggested looking at Ancestry or FindMyPast.

If he went on to serve in WW1 his records may be on Ancestry. If not, they will be on FindMyPast, assuming they were retained.

They will NOT be on the National Archives site.

Try the National Archives site. if he came out on a pension then his records may have been survived

Hi,

I have learnt from birth/marriage certificate that Charles Thomas Andrews was once in the 2nd Dragoon Guards. How do i go about researching his military career when i have no other information. I believe he was probably in Pretoria South Africa around 1900 as he had a daughter in 1900 and her middle name was Pretoria i believe that was due to him being there at the time.

Thanks
