Name: WALKER, Gerald
Registration District: Help Newcastle upon Tyne
County: Northumberland
Year of Registration: 1921
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Mother's Maiden Name: Smith
Volume No: Help 10B
Page No: Help 211

I have looked for marriages in all districts and I cannot find anything for Walker-Smith?

Perhaps they just put Winifred as Walker formerly Smith (to keep up appearances) but were never actually married???

Gerald Walker born 21st November 1921 - , he never married,

His birth cert says - Gerald Boy - father: Gerald Walker - mother: Winifred Walker formerly Smith. Therefore his parents were married but II can't find the marriage info?
Thanks
Jennifer

Hi All
I hope this info helps as I have been doing more searching.

Margaret Craggs – I believe this is her maiden name and she married a Smith.
Margaret had at least one child called Winifred Smith born 1894 – 1960. Don’t know if she had more children.

Winifred Smith had three children – Gerald Walker 1921 – 1973 – Winifred Murphy 1925 – 1981 – Muriel Murphy 1930 – 2000.

Family told me that Winifred Smith 1894 – 1960 was possibly married twice and lived with the third man. Anyway it looks like she had three relationships at various times.
Also I believe Muriel Murphy 1930 – 2000 is not a Murphy but was registered as Murphy. Don’t know what her surname should have been.

Mystery of Winifred Murphy 1925 - 1981 she married Ernie Hutchinson and then William Nelson. Had 7 children, 5 children to Ernie and Twins to William, but raised none? It’s possible one or more died at birth, but the last pregnancy in the 1960’s she gave birth to the twins born 4 weeks early. Through out her life she was desperate to have a family.
So where did all these children go?

Marriage info found – not sure if it is correct family
Winifred Smith (Walker) Newark 7b 1007 oct, nov, dec 1926 page 312
Thomas Walker (Smith) Newark 7b 1007 Page 402
Districk Newark-on-Trent

I am wondering if the father of Gerald Walker born Oct, Nov Dec 1921 was also called Gerald. In those days it was common to call the first born son after the father.

Dose this help, have I made thing a little clearer

Kindest regards
Jennifer

Janet,
Gerald's grandmother, Margaret Craggs - do you know if that is her maiden name or married name?

Is she Winifred's mother?

Janet

Janet Report 22 Jan 2011 14:58

Winifred Smith married June 1925 to David R Murphy in Gateshead. This suggests that she wasn't married to Gerald Walker's father. Ref 10a 1846-jl

Edit - maybe not because Margaret's year of birth differs???

Lynski

Lynski Report 22 Jan 2011 06:42

If Gerald's grandmother on his mother's side was Margaret Craggs this would mean that Winifred was her daughter - how did she come by the surname Smith. Margaret would have to be married to a Smith?

Either that or Winifred Craggs married a smith before marrying a Walker?

Lynski

Lynski Report 22 Jan 2011 06:40

I agree Penny - it is rather confusing???
