Find Ancestors

Hello, I am trying to find James Mitchell who I believe to have been born in Scotland, possibly Forfarshire in 1883. He then moved to Hull in his early twenties to follow a career at sea. He went on to marry Sarah Ellen Coult and stayed in the Hull area for the remainder of his life. I tried ordering James birth certificate unsuccessfully but managed to order his marriage certificate where he names his father as George. I am struggling to find a family that fits this description on any of the Scottish census and wondering if anyone has any ideas. Many Thanks
