Find Ancestors

Having found Horace Gummer in the Bristol Mercury in the 19th century, I have managed to trace his family back to Robert Gummer marrying Mary Stone in 1762 in Bridport Dorset. I am now trying to find Robert's parents but as yet to no avail. Can anyone help please!!!

I have been researching my family name "Gummer" for several years. I have recently discovered that archives of the Bristol Mercury are available from the Britsih Library and having entered the family name as the lookup criteria in the search engine one of the hits referred to a Horace Gummer who worked for WD & HO Wills. I found Horace in the respective censuses going back to 1851 and his father was Stephen Henry whose place of birth is given as "East India Britsih Subject"
How can I find out more birth information about Stephen?

numerous other probably related records there, including Stephen's marriage 1816 the death of Stephen's wife and newborn son in 1821, sadly ... he must have remarried as another child was born 1823 ...

this might suggest that Robert came from somewhere else and married in Mary's home parish

Wow!! What a response. I did not realise that I would get such an immediate reply from so many contributors. Although I have been a member of this website for many years this is the first time that I have made use of this facility.
I apologise to everyone of those who responded as I have realised that I did not explain my problem sufficiently. I have already traced many of the siblings and ancestors of Horace Gummer using much of the information that many of you have published in your responses, i.e from Familysearch etc. and ending back to finding the marriage of Robert Gummer and Mary Stone. My brickwall is finding the parents of Robert Gummer so that I can go back to another generation - my searches of the non-conformist records have been fruitless so far unless Robert was the first of the family to move away from the Anglican church.
If anyone should have any other sources apart from Ancestry, Familysearch and The Genealogist, then I would appreciate any ideas.

I'm stumped on where to go next because we've not found the name of Robert's father - there's a shedload of Gummer's in Bridport but all the ones recorded that I can see we have checked and posted the ones that are yours - there are stacks in Somerset, but are they connected?

just wondering if you have looked in Search Trees top of this page - there may well be other members resarcihng this family who have got back further than you

I'm seeing a bit of a hopeless task I fear.

the marriage record for Robert and Mary has no parents' names on it.

so connecting them to a baptism ... with no name of a parent and no age for them ... would be a guessing game at best would it not ?

it's what happens when we get back to those days when parish records contained only sketchy information.

a will would be one way to connect a parent to Robert but those are scarce on the ground.

Many thanks for the reference to FIBIS as this has been very useful. I and George (also on this site) have been researching the family for quite a few years and we had not come across this part of the family before hence the enthusiasm to find out more about Robert and Mary. It is my hunch that Robert will have been related to the Gummers from SE Somerset (Chard and surrounding villages) from which I am one.
I have managed to purchase a download of the will of Stephen Stone Gummer from documentsonline but it is such a poor scan that it may take me some time to decipher it all - this may give me some clues as to the other son.

have you contacted the local Family History Society - there will be one if you google for it - they have parish records in book or CD form which you can purchase - I have the ones for my local parish and they go back to the early 1700's - might be worth a try
