Hi I am trying to find details of my grandfather James Baker, known as Jim. I know he was born in london somewhere and was born in c1912. He died in 1986 in australia at the age of 74. He was married to Lydia Farely in 1936 and they had three children Doreen (my mother - deceased), James (deceased) and Peter - who emigrated to australia (i would like to trace him also).
I know him had at least one brother and they used to play music together.
Thank you Viv

Do you know his mother's name ?
I have an Australian death cert for one of my ancestors and it names his mother.

Where did your Grandparents marry please? Do you have the marriage certificate as this will give Jim's father's name and occupation?

If this looks right to you and you haven't the marriage certificate then like Rootgatherer states the only way to work back is from the marriage certificate.

Hi Viv.
Being that your grandfather died in Australia( 1986 ) his death cert would fall inside Australian privacy laws.( Restricted access ) not available to the general public.
Unrestricted access: Births: occuring 100 years ago or more Marriages: occuring 50 years ago or more Deaths: occuring 30 years ago or more
The only person/s that could purchase his death cert would be his spouse, parents or children ( with proof of identity )
If all of above are deceased, then the direct next of kin ( with proof of identity )
Australian privacy bdm laws differ from those in the UK
Looking at the Ryerson Index.
BAKER James Death notice 15APR1986 Death 74 late of Thirlmere and UK Sydney Morning Herald 16APR1986
Registry of BDM in New South Wales. http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/familyHistory.htm Also, given that he was born in England, and my own personal view, would be to obtain his marriage cert ( UK ) as he has no control as to what is written on his death cert......and the information supplied is only as good as to how much the "Informant" knew about the deceased.
Tony ( Australia )

If you get the marriage cert it will give his father's name and occupation. As he was born around 1912 there is a fair chance we can find his father in the 1911 census, hopefully married. I don't see what other options you have really as it's such a common name.. jan

Tony and Jan Thank you for all your help. I think there might be one child still alive - Peter who lives in Australia but not sure so will apply for a copy of marriage certificate and then look at census. Thanks Viv x

Do the witnesses offer any clues? Also, I wonder if it's worth checking out his address on the marriage cert on the electoral register to see who else is living there (not available online).
