bear in mind people could put whatever suited them on their certs, e.g. I have one relative who on her marriage put widow even though I have found absolutely no evidence to support a previous marriage, presumably to make herself appear more respectable (as she also had 2 children at the time), I've also got several cases of fictitious fathers being named on marriage certs when the bride/groom was illegitimate with father unknown

If he had divorced, technically he was divorced, surely?

Hi Jan ,
I suppose Grandad stated he was single ,because technically he was . If lily had died i would have thought he might have put widower .
Yes this is his second marriage to Florence ,he died the year after in 1925
Thanks
Barbara

Have had a look at National Archives ,but a bit too expensive to persue .

Is it strange to put single or is that just me? I would be interested to know where the marriage to Florence took place.

EDIT back in London I see. Maybe he just left her/she left him?

Go to:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp

put in one or other (or both names) into word or phrase (might need to try various combinations)

put J77 into the department or series code box and click search

I've had a quick look and can't find anything, but haven't tried all possible spellings etc

carbo Report 20 Feb 2011 11:01

My Grandparents ,Francis Henry Bennett & Lily Bennett [nee Muffin ]married in 1907 St Pancras london . They seperated in about 1912/13 & my Grandfather remarried in 1924 .The divorce if there was one ,should probably be between these dates .
Can someone ,help me please by advising me how to find a divorce for them ..
Kind Regards
Barbara
