Jonesy, Thank you for your info I think that may well be the right date the reason being that I remember him vaguely when i was growing up but the relationship between him and mom was strained and i didnt see him too much, I only found out about the Paddock Lane address last night.

Chrissiex, I did make some enquires about william last week, is that called a thread, and if I make more enquiries how do i continue with the same thread.

Thanks to everyone for their dedication Brenda

How certain are you that he died within that time span?

If he did indeed die at the address you give then the death would be registered in the Walsall registration district.

The only death for either surname and for someone who looks to have been born c1891 is one in 1960:

Name: William Walker
Death Registration Month/Year: 1960
Age at death (estimated): 68
Registration district: Walsall
Inferred County: Staffordshire
Volume: 9b
Page: 788

It is worth remembering that deaths are recorded in the registration district where they occur, not the registration district where the person normally lived.

If he took his stepfathers name for his Army and marriage I would think who ever registered his death would also use that name

The reason why there is a surname confusion is because i was led to believe that he was a Walker (his marriage certificate and army records back that up)But over the last few days thanks to some excellent work by various people on this site we know have reason to believe it may be Webb and he was the son of the wife before they wed

why the surname confusion?
Both are common names its not going to be easy without some cash outlay

As you know his address, the best way of cutting down on the time frame might be to check electoral lists for that address and see when he is no longer listed. You would need to still give a margin of about a year, as it would be a while after his death that the lists were updated.
The old lists are usually at an archive or main library in the same area as that address.
With a fairly common surname, this method might cut down the chances of getting a wrong certificate.

Iam trying to find the date of death of my grandfather he may be William Walker or William Webb and he died in Paddock Lane,Aldridge,Walsall,Staffordshire sometime betweeen 1949 and 1956. Other occupants in the house included his brother Alfred and wife Florence. Many thanks Brenda
