John Bell was my wife's grandfather. From 1911 (and maybe earlier) he was a steward on passenger ships sailing out of Liverpool. I have his seaman's Continuous Certificate of Discharge for all voyages from June 1911 to Feb 1927. I have seen a crew list for the SS Lapland in April 1919 giving his birth date and place of birth as 28 Aug 1884, London. However, his marriage cert to my wife's grandmother (9 Sept 1926) gives his age as 40. His headstone says he died on 8 June 1927, still aged 40 but the entry in the deaths register says he was 41. I therefore have some doubt as to his actual date of birth. The above marriage cert says he was a widower and names his father as Arthur Bell, a deceased woollen merchant.
I can find nothing about John's first marriage nor any record of him prior to 1911, this despite having an address for him in June 1911 of 11 Kemble Street, Liverpool. He is not listed at that address in the 1911 census although the head of the house (John Conway) is described as a ship's steward (a friend / colleague?). Also resident is Elizabeth Bell (aged 27 and single), a cousin of the head of the house (related to John?)
