I'm not sure that any of those Allens lived or died in Australia though -- the notice of the probate was published in Australia, but the probate was granted in England. Notice was probably published there because the deceased owned property or did business in Australia.

Name: Frederick C Allen

Thanks for your replies. It is strange that Mary Harriet is not on the 1881 or 1891 Census with her mother & siblings, can anyone see her for me.

Just a query, why would they become Dame, Sir and Baronet?

Maryb, I have done Hannah's family, her brother was also very well off Managing Director of Alexander Docks, Newport, Monmouth

Mary,

I think you might be right, in the newspaper article on previous page there is a Dame Mary Harriet Corrie, who I thought was Fredericks wife, I believe that they had a son, not sure if any other children.

At the bottom of his will it is written - 'The testator expressed the earnest wish that his son should not rely only upon the income he would derive from the estate, but that he would order his life in such manner as would make him a useful member of the community in whatever part of the world he might make his home.'

Mary Report 6 Mar 2011 11:45

1911 they had,
Violet Parkinson Allen born Ceylon 1904
Frank raymond Allen born Ceylon 1910.

Frederick left estate in New South Wales of £34,400, can you check to see what was the total? I think someone gave me what his cousins, would be worth today, from memory about £46,000,000!!

I am off to bed, nearly 11.30, thanks for all your help,

Joy

I think the chance of there being two Mary Harriet C Allens, one by birth and one by marriage, is rather remote, really.

Son Frank raymond Allen born Ceylon 1910. -- one of the executors named in the newspaper listing about the estate.

1911

ALLEN FREDERICK CHARLES 1865 46 Kensington London
ALLEN MARY HARRIET CORRIE 1875 36 >> wife
ALLEN VIOLET PARKINSON 1904 7
ALLEN FRANK RAYMOND 1910 1

But I could be wrong! ;)

Aren't you doing any searching, Mel??

Marriages Dec 1902
Allen Frederick Charles Winchester 2c 261
Nash Mary Harriet C Winchester 2c 261

Quite the concidence! (The Mary Harriet C Allen was born in Derbyshire, too, which doesn't fit, I think.)

One other likely birth to the marriage:

Births Jun 1912
Allen John P Nash Chelsea 1a 718

I think Mary Harriet Corrie Nash Allen may have been a Nash by marriage, and was possibly this MHC:

Births Dec > 1874
Parker Mary Harriet C > Winchester 2c 111

... although I don't see a marriage to fit -- but there also is no MHC Nash birth.

MHC may have been a dame by birth?

Thanks Maureen, noticed Henrietta but did not think it was the same person, as I did not have 1871 Census!!

Does it say who Ann Allen is to the family?

Thanks, Joy

MaureeninNY Report 2 Jul 2011 11:22

Hi Joy,

No it doesn't say anything about Ann other than she was a widow and born in Wakefield.
