Lynette Report 11 Mar 2011 03:40

I am trying to find information on Charlotte's parents, Charles Bouveng & Sarah Jane ?? They emigrated to Australia from the UK sometime before 1871 as Charlotte was born in Australia.
Two other children were born in Murrurundi, NSW, Sarah J Bouveng (1878) and Phillip Elias Bouveng (1887).
Charles died in 1917 and Sarah Jane died in 1892 at Murrurundi, NSW.

Hi Lynette -- for NSW births:

http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/Index/IndexingOrder.cgi/search?event=births

Only two births show:

24777/1887
BOUVENG PHILIP E
father CHARLES
mother SARAH J
district MURRURUNDI

17328/1878
BOUVENG SARAH J
CHARLES
SARAH
MURRURUNDI

for English marriages:

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

-- no marriage for Charles Bouveng. do you know of some other spelling variation?

Her marriage:

5094/1894
CROTHERS WILLIAM J
BOUVENG CHARLOTTE
MURRURUNDI

Ordinarily the certificate would give her mother's full name.

There are also marriages in 1890 for a Wilhelmina in Murrurundi and 1896 for an Alice M in Scone, and three male Bouveng marriages: Philip E 1911 Parramatta, William 1904 New Angledool (?) and James D 1915 Tamworth. (I only searched to 1925)

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 11 Mar 2011 04:44

This does tell you Sarah Jane's parents' given names:

8703/1892 death
BOUVENG SARAH J
father WILLIAM
mother BRIDGET
MURRURUNDI

but nothing for Charles except his age:

16415/1917 death
BOUVENG CHARLES
81 YRS MURRURUNDI
MURRURUNDI

= c1836

JaneyCanuck Report 11 Mar 2011 04:48

There is not a single entry in the GRO index for England/Wales from 1837 onward for surname Bouveng:

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

and not a Bouveng in the UK censuses, 1841-1901, at least according to Ancestry (and nothing at all similar comes up with its fuzzy search).

From a little googling -- was the name actually Swedish?

I assume the first listing here is you. ;)

http://users.dragnet.com.au/~ggahs/Memint.htm

Bouveng 1857+ Australia, NSW Scone, Murrurundi 33
Bouveng early 1800s Sweden, Uppsala, Uppsala City 33
Bowring - Australia, VIC Melbourne 144

-- although if so, member "33" seems to be familiar with the Swedish origin.

Hi Lynette,

The spelling I found on the NSW Births is Bouweng and the first child was born in 1863, so they arrived sometime before then if this is the correct spelling for this family.

Regards.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 11 Mar 2011 04:53

So MEgirl -- this would be the marriage then!

2984/1862
BOUWENG CHARLES
SHERY SARAH
SCONE

17455/1871
BOUWENG CHARLOTTE
CHARLES
SARAH A
SCONE

and three other births with that spelling.

Did you not know this Lynette?? Or just not mention it ...

MEgirl

MEgirl Report 11 Mar 2011 05:02

Janey, just found that marriage.

Perchino Report 11 Mar 2011 08:01

Just tried google on "Bouweng". No direct match but is selecting sites in Dutch. Could this be a case of a Dutch emigree moving to UK and then Australia in which case may not have been in UK at the time of the Censuses?

Sarah Jane Sherry was b10 Dec 1844 in Singleton NSW and died Scone 13 Dec 1892 Scone

Charlotte Bouveng b 27 Sep 1871 died 16 Jan 1956 in Quirindi NSW
She married William John Crothers b 7 ASep 1872 Cassills NSW and died 26 Apr 1919 in Quirindi NSW

Hi All
Sorry for the late reply, my computer had a malfunction and I have just got back online.
So much information, some I had but a lot I didn't have. I couldn't find the marriage of Charles & Sarah due to the mis spelling of his surname and of course without that information I didn't know Sarah's maiden surname so couldn't search for her birth.
Barry, thanks for the info about Charles' birth in Sweden that I would never have found. I would appreciate Charlotte's siblings names ( I only have 2, namely Phillip Elias and Sarah J); I do have Charlotte & William's 5 children and a photo of William & Charlotte's grave headstone.
Again, thanks to all for the time and effort you have given in searching the information, it is much appreciated.
I will remember in future to try name variations when searching.
Best Wishes to you all...Lyne

There is a Scone connection here - could this be Chas' father, Johan/John?

2 [pounds] REWARD.-CARL MAGNUS BOUWENG, a Swede, who arrived in the ship Sea Star as a seaman, in Adelaide, 9th July, 1864, supposed to have since arrived in Sydney, he is requested to writes to his brother JOHN BOUWENG; or any person giving information by which I can hear from him shall be paid the above reward. JOHN BOUWENG, Post Office. Scone.

And more recently:

EDIT: This is the Edna mentioned above - seems Veronica, John & Eric were their chn:

Thanks so much for the additional information, it certainly looks like the names you have mentioned are Bouveng family connections.

Hi Cherilyn
Thanks for the information on Charlotte's siblings and partners (the spelling surname variations is why I couldn't find them).
I will check out the websites you have mentioned.
Your help is much appreciated.

My pleasure! Always useful to use wildcards (*) with unusual surnames.

On the SHERRY side, this marriage cert may be useful:
V1843575 27C/1843 SHERRY WILLIAM [married] REGAN BRIDGET MR

But being early may not have full information.
MR = Church of England Oakville, Whittingham, Wollombi

Can only see 2 children - Sarah in 1844 and Joan in 1847.

William & Bridget may have both been convicts...see www.records.nsw.gov.au - also an old post that states same: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/AUS-CONVICTS/2000-08/0966056737
