Robert Thompson - Born Manchester, Lancashire

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Regqueenie Report 12 Mar 2011 12:46

In 1851 Census for Manchester, Parish of St. Mary's, Deansgate, Lancashire, there is a
Robert Thompson (aged ?) and he is 'BASKET MAKER, MASTER'

Margaret Thompson wife aged 43yrs (1808) Sheffield? or Huffield?, Yorkshire
George son, aged 7 born (1844) Manchester
John 5 born Manchester
Robert 3 born Manchester

Anyone able to read his age for me?... I think it says '56' but for the life of me, I cannot find this man at all in the 1841 census as a basket maker.

Thing is, I sent off for certificate, for his marriage to Margaret as believe her name to be a Margaret Hindle, and it came back as him being a 'MASON' and his father a Samuel Thompson, 'MASON' - this surely cant be the same man then.? I mean, if he was a basket maker and a 'Master' it meant he had qualified in a trade, and was now teaching an apprentice perhaps? would this then make him a 'School teacher' or is that 'throwing the net out too wide'! - There is a Margaret Thompson in the 1841 cenus in 'PRESTON', Lancs, were a John Hindle is living, (her father was a WEAVER), but she is not saying she is born in Yorkshire, her husband Robert's address on the marriage cert for 1841, April is in 'FLEETWOOD' and by the time the census is carried out in June 1841 they are married but not living as a couple, him probably working away or something.

What really is problem is that in the 1861 census, I find Margaret, who is now apparently born in Sheffield, and 10 years younger at 34 years!, but the same children and ages......can anyone advise as to what my next steps should be? where is Robert, the Basket Maker!
Many thanks from Regina
p.s. I have a tree on ancestry and have the marriage cert pasted on there.

The age looks like 56 to me but with that stroke through it I suppose it could be something else.

Hi Mad Bull, Vera and Andy,

Yes folks, I thought it was 56 years of age, but it could even be 36 or 66 because of the line smack right in the middle of it. Nuisance that, because you can magnify it as much as you want, and still not read it in entirety alas!

Yes the 1861 shows Margaret, now a 'Widow', with her children, and coming from Holmfirth, Yorkshire....she is now, 34 or not what she would have been if we follow the 1851 census, 53. Does anyone know why there is such variation in the ages and even the place of birth? I mean I think it says 'Sheffield' Yorkshire in the 1851 census...it doesnt say 'Huffield does it? because there was a Huffield in Yorkshire also I think,.

If you look at the 1841 census for a Margaret Thompson born in 1808, you do find her living with a John Hindle (her dad), in Preston. This would mean Robert was working away or had bimbled down to Manchester to set up home for them before the 1851 census. He sure didnt last long living in his new home of 26 Cumberland street, because in 1861 he is no longer alive, if this is his wife Margaret.

Tried looking at 1851 census and the others living as lodgers. One a Charles Morecroft who is also a 'basket' - was he anywhere living with Robert Thompson in the 1841 census, but couldnt find him. The other names I think are 'Yate' and 'Besaunt', but again cant find them. I thought I would uncover Robert in Fleetwood, but in 1841 census, there is no Fleetwood, Lancs to find, only Clevelys. Reason I mention this place is because on his marriage in 1841 April (before census in June) his address is Fleetwood.

Hello Mike

I am now wondering why I chose this. Think it is because her name was Margaret on the census and so assumed her Margaret Hindle. I went mainly by the children, as they have appeared with a Margaret as mother, and their ages have not altered and have shown as '4' in 1851, then '14' in 1861 - but yes, the mother Margaret in the 1861 census is now 10 years younger! ...oh dear........ Also another member had said the surname was Hindle and I thought I must be the one who is wrong!? now I wonder, especially as the marriage certificate indicates Robert is a 'Mason' and his father Samuel a 'Mason' this clearly does not show him as a 'Basket Maker' - are there other Margarets then that you have seen and I have missed?...

Can't see a birth for George T Thompson - which would give you mother;s maiden name.

Just wondering if the T should be an F...

Again there is a Robert Thompson and Margaret listed in 1843 in Chorlton but turns out her spouse was Thomas Savage.

so .......
Maybe the Hindle marriage is correct, but the occupation doesn't fit.
Argghhh !

What age does it give for Robert on the marriage cert you have ?

Regqueenie

Regqueenie Report 13 Mar 2011 14:11

Hi Mike

There is no age on the marriage cert. just 'Full Age' which is always the case with older certificates, its a nuisance that.....I dont know why he doesnt exist in the 1841 census. I thought his dad is Samuel, wonder if he also is Samuel Robert and he uses Robert only. But no Samuel as a Basket Maker. No Robert which is odd. If his wife Margaret was from Sheffield Yorks, then perhaps he was living in Yorkshire in 1841 census, so tried it, but nothing useful really. Just clutching at straws thinking this and that, but what you have given me regarding births, thats good, I will go look at the George Frederick 1843 you mentioned. Will get back to you. Thank you for taking the trouble to search for me. Was just wanting advice but the fact you have searched also, is a great help and is appreciated Mike.
