I am searching for any information on Richard Jones. He was given as the father of William Jones when William married Sarah Alexander on 3/6/1865 in Urchfont, Wiltshire. Richard's occupation was shown as Labourer.

Kathleen, how old was William when he married?

They're such common names we need a bit more info to narrow the search.

Hi MarieCeleste
William was 23 years old at the time of his marriage. I have no other information on Richard Jones.

MarieCeleste: William's birth was registered under the name of Roger Bridle (1Q 1842 Devizes Vol.8 Page 323) and his mother was Mary Ann Bridle. In 1854 Mary Ann married Roger Brown and in the 1861 Census Roger was now William Brown and living with his mother, step-father and sister. He took his grandmother's surname when he married under William Jones.

Kathleen, just my opinion, but I doubt if Richard Jones actually existed as his father. It's extremely common to invent a father to "save face".

IF William was registered as Bridle but used his grandparent's name at marriage it's unlikely that his father was Jones (I'm not saying definitely not!).

Do you have William/Roger's birth cert to see what it says for father?

Also, have you actually found a record for Mary Ann's marriage in 1854? I can't locate one. There is a marriage for Roger Brown to Mary Ann Jones, but I can't find a marriage for Mary Ann Bridle to a Jones?

Thanks for your comments MarieCeleste.

Roger Bridle's birth was registered Devizes 1Q 1842 Vol.8 Page 323 .
I haven't obtained a copy of his birth certificate. As he was born out of wedlock it's possible that the father's name would not have been entered (or even known) I think your idea of Richard Jones being invented to 'save face' is quite a possibility.

Mary Ann married Roger Brown on 26.2.1854 Registered Devizes 5a 133.
Jones was her mother's maiden name.(sorry, should have mentioned that )

Bridle has been Bridewell, Bridwell and Budall in records and censuses and Roger/William's surname has been Bridle(and variants) , Jones and Brown(e) He had 11 children, the births were registered under Jones but through their lives some changed from Jones to Brown and back again!
