One birth: One entry number: but with two different child's surnames is not uncommon and becoming less uncommon as people are having more and more children out of wedlock these days.

My granddaughter's birth originally appeared 3 times in the index.

Twice in the actual year of her birth, once under my unmarried daughters surname. Once under her fathers surname with her mother shown with only her maiden name. Both entries showed the same entry number.

Her parents re-registered her birth after they eventually married a few years later.

She appears again under her fathers surname with her mother now shown as Mrs xxxxxxx, formerly Jones. That registration is in a different year and has a completely different entry number.

Her earlier birth registrations were eventually removed from the publicly viewable index only quite recently.

There is no wrong doing at all.

One child - one entry number + 2 surnames is very common and indicates that the parents weren't married to each other.

The father is present at the registration to acknowledge that he is the father of the child.

My mum was registered twice, once under her fathers name and once under her mothers married name. Parents weren't married to each other.
Volume number is the same but page numbers are different.
When my parents married, the marriage was in the register twice, each showing different maiden names,

is there any wrong doing here as i thought you could only register one child to one surnameand one entry number

could both the parents of registered the child but under the two surnames??being park and mayes

For the child's birth to be registered under 2 different surnames the father should have been present at the registration.

If he gave his surname as Park then birth would only appear once as Park mmn Powles,

E.G. Mother: Park formerly Powles. Father: Mr Park

As Grace is also registered as Mayes mmn Powles the father must have given his surname as Mayes.

E.G. Mother: Park formerly Powles. Father: Mr Mayes

Alternatively of course the mother could have been using the surname Mayes in which case the birth would have been registered as Mayes,

E.G. Mother: Mayes formerly Powles. Father: Mr Mayes

and I suspect the father registered the birth giving the mother his name for decency sake.

There is only one entry number as there is only one child.

What is very strange in this instance is that there are actually 3 surnames involved, Powles (The mother), Park & Mayes. That has got me puzzled.

i see what you mean there Jonesey but what i dont understand is how you can have 1 child registered under two different names but both with the same entry number??
any ideas?

If the parents are not married at the time a birth is registered then if the father is present at the registration and agrees that he is indeed the baby's father the birth is registered under both the parents surnames.

i did wonder even thought maybe adopted or fostered but then there would be a differt certificate and wouldnt be registered in two surnames??

I may be wrong, but could it be because the parents weren't married, sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong :-))

yes there was two but that was in 1951,1952 and i have both of them 100% as one is my mum,but unfortunately we only learned of graces about 12 months ago
all are park and mothers maiden name is powles

were the any more children to check their entries?

i have grace park born in 1961 also on the same entry number grace mayes 1961 the mothers maiden name is the same-powles i have sent for the birth certificate and it state the same??
am i missing something here or is it just going to send me nuts??(probably)
i know that the people here are a bit early date wise as i have been told before but im getting know where and could really do with a kick in the right direction rather than the wrong one!
i have tried to search the two surnames and well thought i was getting somewhere with mayes but it seems like its a no go wrong again.
if there any kind people out there who could possible spare a bit of there time to double check for me just in case im being a complete plonka and just not getting it!
