Charlotte`s death in Coombs I`m pretty sure is right as Coombs is on Vancouver Island which is where Dad`s family come from & some of the family lived in Coombs. I`m not too sure about Oxford as I was only 7 when I emigrated to England from Nanaimo & my geography of the island is pretty sketchy. It sounds as if it`s the right William though & well worth following up. Many thanks.

Well worth investigating, thanks. The Canadian records are correct - my grandmother was Alice Baker - she married Benjamin McKenzie & my father was born in Wellington BC.I`ll follow up on the Dorking records you have & see where it gets me.

Im posting your PM here so others can have the info too. Come back and post on here so can keep track of things

From Margaret
Sorry if I`m messing up, but this is my first time doing this.
Your records are correct - Alice was my paternal grandmother- I lost touch when my father William Baker McKenzie died in 1954 & Mother took me to her family in England. We all lived in Nanaimo BC.

Shot in the dark:

Births Dec 1852 (>99%)
Baker William Dorking 2a 97

But then again maybe not if the fathers details on the marriage certificate were accurate:

1861:
Name: William Baker
Age: 8
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1853
Relation: Son
Father's Name: James Baker
Mother's Name: Letitia Baker
Gender: Male
Where born: Dorking, Surrey, England

Mind you Letitia aged 56 in 1861 looks a bit old to have an 8 year old son. Maybe William was illegitimate and "invented" a father to save face.

It could be an interesting family to follow up anyway:

1871:
Name: William Baker
Age: 20
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1851
Relation: Convict (Prisoner)
Gender: Male
Where born: Dorking, Surrey, England
Civil parish: Portsea
Ecclesiastical parish: Trinity

Country: England
Registration district: Portsea Island
Sub-registration district: Portsea Town
ED, institution, or vessel: Her Majestys Convict Prison Portsea

I think you mean either 1882 or 1892....don't you?

What was William's occupation?

Was he really 50 or 60 years old when he married?

Who witnessed the marriage?

Help please - I`ve hit a brick wall! I`m trying to find detail of my paternal great-grandfather, William Baker born England 1852. The only records I have are a marriage record ref: Dorking 2a-215 - Dec 20th1882 where he married Charlotte Dibble. He emigrated to British Columbia, Canada shortly after where my grandmother Alice Baker & her siblings were born.On the marriage certificate it lists his father as John Baker(deceased) & his place of residence at time of marriage Dorking. I have tried looking up census records, but I`ve found nothing, nor can I find any record of his mother.I would appreciate any help you can give me as I cannot get any further on my own.Thankyou in anticipation.
