Neath and Merthyr Tydfil are both in Glamorgan, as is Cardiff.

Likely, half a world away, Cardiff was a more recognizable place name.

My gr-grfather's sister from Bodmin born 1854 married someone from Neath. ;) The mining industry was the common bond, as it likely was for you two families, even after they moved that half a world away.

The saying goes: A mine is a hole anywhere in the world with a Cornishman at the bottom of it.

It also appears that I have the place of birth for Ephraim John incorrect. Just discovered that Family tradition is that he was born in Cardiff.

Cannot see any of the family in 1881, so did they all emigrate?
If they married in NZ, was he born in England, or is this just an assumption?

There are 3 trees on Ancestry ,all recording his marriage to Cora Roberts in 1875
All trees state he died in West Ham 1st June 1905
His record states he was in Ratcliffe, London in the 1891 Census and in the 1901 Census was in Shadwell London
His parents were William Alexander Thomas and Louisa Hone
