Hey everyone,

Just to let you know that my Aunt has heard back from the Records department at Chelsea Town Hall today and they have confirmed that Catherine Hughes was 45 *MINUTES* old when she died! So the record with "45" is correct......kind of.

Anyway, thank you all very very much for your help! :-)

Just an update......

My Aunt who lives in Chelsea is going to visit the records department in the old Town Hall sometime next week to see if they can help with the death certificate.

According to the RBKC website, they don't use the GRO references when it comes to births, deaths, etc..... so this could help us somewhat, especially if there was indeed a typo in the transcription.

Thank you all very much for your help and advice!

I'm tempted to order the death certificate from GRO for the "45" Catherine Hughes in hope that it was typo on someone's behalf......

Or perhaps I will try ringing them? Hmmmm.....

And JaneyCanuck, sorry for the "frosty" start.....just a little stressed!!

Searching for all deaths in Kensington in 1934, there are four at the top of the list with no given name or surname, all aged 0.

There is one in Q2, and there are 3 in Q4. I looked at the images, and unfortunately I would suspect that these were abandoned infants -- recorded as "Unknown (Female)".

Well, there's only one way to find out, and I guess if it were me I would do it.

You might find though that if you called the GRO and asked this, whether there is any error in the index for that entry, they would tell you if you tell them whatever the circumstances are.

I would have thought, like Jan, that the child was already deceased when the birth was registered since the registration was so soon. There may have been an oversight of some sort in the registry office if the birth and death were registered at the same time. You might enquire of the registry office directly as to whether there might be a death registration that didn't make it into the GRO index.

These days you have to register the birth and death before the body can be released and a burial can take place, not sure about 1934 but I am guessing it was similar.
I have checked the Ancestry records manually and nothing else presents itself.

Jan-

I've come across this one so many times and at times I've considered it being an incorrect entry, but I don't know.....

JaneyCanuck-

Her birth was registered on the 13th February 1934, so 2 days after being born and 3 days before being buried.

Hughes deaths registered in Q1 1934 start on this page index image page at Ancestry:

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/iexec?htx=View&r=5538&dbid=7579&iid=ons_d19341az-0526&fn=Catherine&ln=Hughes&st=d&ssrc=&pid=28363157

You might want to browse through looking for deaths with age "0" (and possibly do the same for the next quarter).

She may have died in a different reg dist if in hospital.

She may not have been named yet when her death was registered. What date was her birth registered?

I was going to suggest checking out the CH aged 45 as well, in case there was a mistranscription of something like "4 days".

I can't see it either. The only long shot is that this is entered incorrectly, though it does say 45 on image:

Deaths Mar 1934 (>99%)
Hughes Catherine 45 Kensington 1a 162

It's the 2nd find....mothers maiden name: Cook.

The birth certificate came through from the GRO today with the birthdate 11th February 1934.
I got information through from the cemetery where we know she's buried the other day with the burial date of 16th February 1934.

You're every so very welcome.

edit to go with edited subject line -- I'm afraid I don't consider this "desperate" either. As I said, some searches truly are.

I have no idea why or how she died. She was a few days old at most! She was born in Kensington, London and died in the same area too!

And JaneyCanuck, this may not seem urgent to you, but I have my reasons for needing this information as soon as I can get it, which I'm not prepared to give on a public forum, thank you!!

I assume

Name: Catherine Hughes
Mother's Maiden Surname: Jones
Date of Registration: Jan Feb Mar 1934
Registration district: Pwllheli
Registration county: Wales
Volume Number: 11b
Page Number: 471

edit, missed the other possibility

Name: Catherine Hughes
Mother's Maiden Surname: Cook
Date of Registration: Jan Feb Mar 1934
Registration district: Kensington
Registration county: Greater London
Volume Number: 1a
Page Number: 149

Urgent or not --

and in the instructions presented when starting a thread:

As Jax says, where are we talking about? May I ask why she died - might give a clue as to how old she was.

Why is this needed URGENTLY?

Some searches really are urgent -- elderly parents hoping to find siblings before they die, people looking for close family for medical reasons ...

Sarah-Jayne

Sarah-Jayne Report 21 Apr 2011 18:36

This is exactly what I had assumed, but I have looked and looked and just can NOT find one!! :-/

I've looked through the records for all 4 quarters in 1934, but nothing!

I've tried various spellings of "Catherine" and "Hughes" but again, nothing!!

She is unlikely to have been stillborn if her birth was registered.

If there was a birth cert there should be a death cert where was she born?

I hope someone can help me, or at least help point me in the right direction here......

I've tried and tried, yet am still unable to find a death record for my Aunt - Catherine Hughes.

I have a copy of her birth certificate and know the exact date when she was buried.....she died in the days between being born on the 11th February 1934 and being buried on the 16th February 1934.

I know the general public can't access Stillborn records, but if she was stillborn, would there be a seperate certificate to her birth one?

This is REALLY doing my head in now as I really don't know where to look next!! I'm doing this for my Mum and her other sisters, as they're intrigued to find out about the sister they never knew!

If anyone can help/advise me, then I will be eternally grateful!

Kind Regards,
Sarah-Jayne
