Emily Ward b 1869 Layham Suffolk married Sergeant David Carnell ,b1855 Devon, of the East Lancs Regt. at Colaba ,Bombay .India 10th Jan 1894.
As in 1891 Emily was a housemaid in Stone ,Kent and David had been in India since Jan. 1880 I am intrigued to know they met. I have found a Miss Ward (no initial ) leaving London on 23-8-1993 on S.S. Clyde for Bombay, but as she was accompanied by a female Indian servant there are doubts that this is Emily. It may be that David met her while on home leave but while I know officers were granted such at this time I'm not sure the arrangement applied to other ranks. Can anyone help please; info ,views, ideas, records to search etc. Regards Jeff Ward

I see they were in England by 1901, I assume you have all this info already.
Just in passing, did you have this 1911? I agree, it's intriguing. Is there any chance they were related in some way? It occurs to me because that is how my grandparents met, couldn't figure it out till I found this bit of info!

Thanks for your help, I had the 1911 info, the Wards are siblings of Emily .Alfred's wife had just died and Charlotte brought up Constance as her own. Charlotte never married. nor did Alfred remarry. Emily moved to Melbourne Au. with her children sometime before 1914. In 1917 she married another soldier George Alfred Valentine. Jeff Ward

Are you in touch with other family members who might know? Otherwise I can't think of anything else than either a family connection, or possibly she had a relation in India, or someone in the military. Or possibly she travelled as a maid or companion? As her father was an agricultural labourer they can't have been well off so it's a real puzzle.

I presume you have David's service record which is very detailed of the times he returned home and the time he was in India or South Africa it does look extremely unlikely that he did return and meet Emily.

As she worked as a housemaid in 1891, maybe she went to India in the role of a servant or companion to a new post in India. Possibly Miss Ward and the indian servant were both in service.

I did wondered about the family she worked for but they are not mentioned on the passenger list. I'm in touch with both Carnells and Wards .Emily was my great aunt. Also I'm told the Carnells are a Kent based family . I'm sure none of her siblings went to India. I should have mentioned David died 1907. It is known that military men serving in India were not encouraged to marry until they were quite senior in service. Also single ladies anxious to be married went to India so perhaps some sort of scheme existed to connect them. Just a thought. Jeff Ward.
