Thanks Catherine. I've put full details on the 'looking for living relatives section' but here it is: John Hill married Martha Dickson Walker at Oswald Street Glasgow in May 1922. She lived in Great Eastern Street, he lived in Gallowgate. She died in 1949 (living in Corsock Street) and he died in 1962 (still living in Glasgow, but died in Kilpatrick, I suspect in hospital as he was 79). Martha had three sons (at least) William, James and Samuel, and they may have had a child or children themselves after the marriage. There was a Martha Hill born in Camlachie in 1922, but I don't yet know who her parents were.

If you give details of the second marriage that would be helpful.

I'd just like to thank everybody on this thread and say that I have now, at last, found my grandfather, who apparently remarried in 1922 and eventually died in 1962. I am now looking for any other descendants he might have had.

I'd just like to say that, with the particular help of George of Westbury, I have now found out where my grandfather served, something I have been trying to find out for nearly forty years. Many thanks to you all. Siobhan

Thanks very much. I just wondered if you had managed to glean anything I had missed. It was his service record that led me to finding the rest of his family in Glasgow only last week. It was a bit of a roundabout route, but immensely satisfying in the end.

Thank you very much everyone for your responses. All of these entries relate to my grandfather and I have them on file.

George of Westbury, you mention his service number - is this the number that appears on his 'Deserters Account?'. If so, do you think that is his Labour Corps number? I submitted that to somebody with a military searches connection and they said there was nothing they could to without his Labour Corps number. I had given them that one, thinking it was it.

Glitterbaby you mention that there was a Court Enquiry in June saying that he had absented himself on 4th June. Did you get that in from his Service Record (I found it hard to read as the script was so small and may have missed it) or somewhere else? I suppose what I'm thinking is that if I could find out where he was based when he deserted, it would give me a point to start from in tracking down his next move. Siobhan

I am trying to find out where my grandfather went in 1918 after he deserted from the Labour Corps on the Home Front. His name was John Hill, born 31.12.1883 and his parents were James Hill and Mary (nee Malone). They lived at various addresses in and around the East Glasgow area, mainly Dennistoun. After thirty years of searching, I have recently found his parents and siblings, but I'd love to find out where he disappeared to. Nobody in the family knows. (his wife died in 1916 and his two children John and Mary were brought up by her family in Northern Ireland and, later, Kent). He worked as a bricklayer and there was a family rumour that after he deserted he used the name of his dead brother Thomas. Thomas drowned on 5.11.1917 near Kilmarnock. My grandfathers siblings were James (d 1898), George (d 1942), Thomas (d 1917), Jane, Joseph and Elizabeth. Elizabeth may have died as late as the nineteen seventies. Her married name was Kenny. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Siobhan Hill- PS I have already checked where he might have been based when he went missing, but without his Labour Corps number, no body can tell me.
