Wonder if someone could help, pleasse?

There are two registrations, as follows, for John William Linge
FBMD
Teesdale, Vol. 10a, 271
Teesdale, Vol. 10a, 272

I know that one of them is 'mine' but can't comprehend why there are two births registered together. It has been suggested that the registrar may have made an error when turning the page and entered one birth twice, which I can understand, but to be sure that my tree is correct could anyone tell me whether they are two separate people, with two different sets of parents or whether they are twins with one dying almost immediately and the other being named the same?

Any help in clarifying this situation would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, the birth was registered 4th Q, 1876.

I'll get this right in end, sorry everyone.

The JW Linge births were actually registered 3rd Q 1876.

Try phoning the GRO or the registry office where the birth was registered. They may have a look and check them for you.

As you cant access the actual certs I cant see how anyone can answer the query .
Your best bet is to ask the GRO :-D

It's likely that there is only ONE birth but whoever transcribed it couldn't decipher whether the number was 271 or 272 so entered both .

I think twins would have the same reference number.

there are actually both records on the GRO index which have been transcribed correctly so the fault (if any) is with the original registrar

rather strangely I had to go to 'view images' in freebmd to find this.

when clicking as normal on the spectacles both pages gave the original page 'letter A'

I've contacted the Registry Office which has the records for Teesdale, explained the situation regarding JWL name and two registrations and the person to whom I spoke is going to look for them and call me back with the details.

For anyone who is interested, I'll post the outcome here.

I've got my man!
Got copies of death and birth certificates to be sure.
Two John William Linges registered same birthday, same district (Teesdale), coincidentally (or not so) one with mother Sarah Wallis and the other Sarah Wallace. One with father John and the other William.

After receiving baptism details my JwL's mother had entered his dob a month behind (legal requirements? or simply cousins/sisters-in-law waiting to register together - I'll never know).

Yes, after perusing the death cert both names are entered on it so uncle who registered death must have known the family secret.

Latest plea for help with the Linge lads.

Although Alice Linge (Linje in 1881 Census) was registered as the daughter of John Linge, living Althorne, Essex, she was born in Coundon/Auckland, Durham. However, I've only been able to find the baptism of Ada Alice Annie Linge, born 1875 in Auckland District and it gives her parents as William and Eliza. Could these two actually be her Godparents?

The previous birth of the second John William (not mine) with father William Linge and mother formerly Sarah Wallace, for which I have the birth certificate should anyone be interested leads me to think I've been on the wrong William Linge trail. Could this be the William in the 1891 Census who actually gives his birthplace erroneously as Bringham, Scotland - when in fact on the other censuses he gives it correctly as Suffolk? He was certainly in the NE in 1881.

Were my John William Linge b 1847/8 Mayland Essex and the William born 1856/7 Barningham Suffolk related?

Sorted.

Rang the Registry Office and the Registrar kindly gave me the details I needed for Ada Alice Annie.

I still have a birth certificate for John William Linge born 1876 to William and Sarah Linge (nee Wallace). This is not 'my' John William Linge born to John and Sarah (nee Wallis).

William Linge b 1852
born Essex

I have a lot of info on William but need help to find out what happened to him between 1879 and the 1890 Census. William's first wife and two children died in 1879 and it seems he disappeared for a while.

I can't find him on the 1881 Census but I know he returned to the NE with a new wife because he is there in 1891.

I'm asking for more help, please, about the following children who may have been John and Elizabeth Linge's (nee Thorogood). Can anyone be kind enough to confirm their parentage through indexed birth records, please?

William Walter (1873-1879) Auckland District

The following may have been born in Essex:
Eliza, born and died 1880 (I believe J & E already had an Eliza b 1878)
Arthur (1881-1882)
James born and died 1883
Grace Eva b 1897
Percy born and died 1899
Alfred b 1900

I've discovered that one child listed as his daughter by John Linge is actually the daughter of his brother and I've rung the Registrar to confirm this.

I've bought a number of birth certificates - one of which is not mine so if anyone would like it here's the info.
John William Linge born Staindrop 2 July 1876
Parents: William and Sarah (nee Wallace)

LINGE TWINS

It seems that there are several sets of twins in the Linge family. Does anyone know the parents of:

Albert Walter and Edward George Linge
born Rochford, Reg. 1901, Q3?

I don't want to buy more birth certs which are not from 'my' ancestors.
