This ancestor left the marital home and two sons in about 1905/6 and was never heard of again. I cannot find any divorce from his wife Clara (nee Hallam) but she did remarry in 1932 - I assume her marriage was annuled or he was declared dead. His son and grandson always wanted to know what happened to him but I was unable to find out before his grandson (my much loved father in law) died. His wife would like to have an answer to this puzzle before she too passes on. Does anyone know of Frederick and what happened to him? Maybe he emigrated, died in the war or just moved away and changed his name.... any help would be appreciated.

If you have a copy of his wife's remarriage certificate what does it state as her status, widow ect
In 1905/6 divorce was really only the prerogative of the wealthy. Presumably as you say his son and grandson tried to find him I can only assume that they presumably believed that he was still alive at the time they did that.

Hello Susan and welcome to the boards.
If you try putting William's name into the Search Trees box above, you will see that several other people possibly have him in their tree. If you find a connection, you can contact the tree owners who may know something of him. Regards. Cx.

Thanks everyone What I know is: Frederick Arthur born Basford Nottinghamshire 1876 son of Walter and Sarah, 5th of 9 children. Married Clara Hallam Basford 1901, had Fred 1902 and Arthur 1904/5. Various professions, Hosiery Brusher and Stoker on a Stationary Engine to name two. He disappeared from the marital home shortly after 1904/5 birth of his second son. Clara did not remarry for many years and her son Fred, and his son Alan, did try to find him to see if he was still alive or not - I haven't got the certificate for Clara's remarriage yet (in next month's budget), I have found many possible deaths for Frederick Sabins but I cannot find him in the 1911 census - I have tried various names, Fred, Frederick and Arthur (by which he seems to have been known in 190)1. Without an idea of where he went or limitless budget for numerous death certs I am a little lost. Also puzzled as to why Clara waited until 1932 to remarry (she was with Joseph Hallam long before this. I originally thought it was because she heard of his death. Unfortunately all involved have now passed on and most of the family "gossip" is through Alan's (grandson) wife. She thinks he was declared dead because of length of absence and I wonder if there is there anywhere I can check for people declared dead in absentia (no death cert issued). Does anyone know?
