Please can anyone advise me.
I am looking for my husbands Grandmother. Laura/Lily Smith .b 1887 Barnsley Yorkshire. On the 1911 census she is Laura but was know to everyone as Lily
Was married to a Mr. Baker ( Cannot find a record of the marriage) but left him to live with Charles Mapplebeck.( My Husbands Grandfather) we believe they never married ( Cannot find a record of the marriage for them either)
The first child to Charles and Laura/Lily was Caroline and was reg. as Caroline Mapplebeck Baker, they went on to have a further 12 children and the first 8 are all Mapplebeck Baker, the rest they dropped the Baker from the name.
Thank you
Moira :-S

.
Do you know when she died? Can you get hold of her death cert. With luck it should give you her birthday and you can work out if one of these entries on FreeBMD is correct.

If she never likely married Mr Mapplebeck I wonder if she never divorced or was even ever married to Mr Baker. She was obviously very young to have been partnered with two men by the time she was age around 24 in 1911.

You might be more lucky if you can obtain some of the children's certificates. I also find it a puzzle that the children seem to have their father's name as a middle name and the mother's name as surname.

Good luck.

I would think it very unlikely that if she had married Mr Baker that she would have got divorced because they would not have been able to afford it. Also why would she call herself Baker if she had not married Mr Baker. It is so frustrating

Have you eliminated this possible marriage?

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

Baker Thomas Albert Doncaster 9c 1344
RYLES Catherine Doncaster 9c 1344
SMITH Lily Doncaster 9c 1344
WARDLE Austin Doncaster 9c 1344

Perhaps someone with a sub for the 1911 could check to see if the above Austin Wardle married a Catherine?

EDIT

Using the free search facility on the 1911 Wardle did married a Catherine. So that Smith / Baker marriage could be a possibility?

Yup. Living Rotherham and married for 6 years. Second line of confirmation is that I found births for them on FreeBMD

This could be a poss. as they lived close to the boarder of Barnsley/ Rotherham, does it say what Thomas Baker did as a job.
