Margee ~ Sorry If I done something wrong by starting a different thread!!!! but this thread is to find out more about the NO3 NORTHERN NON COMBATANT CORP ~ I only put details of my relative to give the thread some context.

I know I am unlikely to find out exactly where they went and what they did (or my relatives actual role) but there may be someone out there who knows more about this NCC 'regiment'.

Jonesey ~ thanks for your insight on conscientious objectors.

Around 16,000 men were recorded as conscientious objectors, with Quakers, traditionally pacifist, playing a large role: 4500 objectors were sent to do 'work of national importance' such as farming, 7000 were ordered non-combatant duties, but 6000 were forced into the army, and when they refused orders, they were sent to prison.

Many objectors accepted non-combat service, for example working in the dangerous role of stretcher-bearers. Conscientious objectors who were deemed not to have made any useful contribution were disenfranchised for five years after the war, but there was no administrative machinery to enforce such disenfranchisement.

Don't put off until tomorrow doing what you can do today. If you like doing it today you can do it again tomorrow. Be kind to your children for it is they who will decide which care home you end up in.

Ancestry has some records for him. I will look at them for you.

Not much info I'm afraid. He was exempted as a conscientious objector. His address at call up was the Theatre Royal, Middlesborough. His next of Kin is his aunt Alice Risdon? living at 3 Prince Albert St, Brighton. The sheet with the posting on it is damaged so unable to read where he was posted to.

I believe my Great Great Uncle Julian Robert Williams was in the no3 northern? non combatant corp. He was accepted in June1916. The papers I have state he was 'posted' in July 1916 but does not say where or to do what

Can anyone shed any light on his non military career?

My great great uncle was never spoken about in the family, my great Aunts and grandad did not know he even excisted ~ I think that may have been because he was a conscientious objector? :0(

Any help would be appreciated.
