By the way - Journeyman means that he had served his apprenticeship in his trade and was paid by the day (from 'jour' - french) for the work which he did!

Have you ticked to say that you have the GRO reference?

If so, you should only need to give the Quarter and the year and the reference numbers.

It will cost £9.25

Are you ordering it through GRO site?

You don't need the dob to order the cert - Hang on a while till you can explain what site you are on and what you are doing!!

I don't see why not Daniel and the 1911 backs it up !!

Someone has said that to me before Dea. I am applying for Grandma and Grandads birth certs at the mo but I am stuck on Grandmas DOB. I have ??/09/1921 should i just guess the date they wont let me proceed otherwise.

I think Ruchard is Georges father but one thing i don't understand is would George have married Mary Graham at 16??? and she was 18.

Don't think so Jax. Names I have not heard of I did find out that Grandmas father was deceased. That was Robert Cartmell. Also the company which Grandad worked for which could be interesting. It refered to my Great Grandfather George as a Tiler & Slater (Journeyman)Have you got any idea what journeyman means?

Do you know exactly where I order the birth cert from please would it be the same place?

Danny

Looks good to me Danny

You said the marriage cert tied in with everything we said, if it said his father was George then that 1911 could be them but to do it properly you could get the birth cert.

were there any witnesses on the marriage cert who could be siblings do you think?

Hi Guys

Thanks once again for the advice. I have edited the first post, good job you mentioned about not deleting it coz I nearly forgot. Mgnv thanks for all the sites. I really like http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/indexp.html. Theres is some really good stuff on there.

Thanks again Jax for all the help can you take a quick look at my first post again just to see if its ok.

I think my next step should be to get my grandfather richards birth cert to confirm his parents names is that correct.

Thanks so much guys

Danny - you can edit or delete any of your own posts BUT DON'T DELETE YOUR VERY FIRST POST - if you do, the whole thread will vanish.

Danny - Irrelevant bit FYI

The GRO(I) index thru 1958 (excl N. Ireland post-partition) is available at:
https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1®ion=EUROPE

One can purchase certs (or cheaper still, the uncertified images of the rego) via:
http://www.groireland.ie/

The Irish 1901/1911 censuses are free at:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/
[Not heard of any release dates for next census (=1926 in both Irelands)]

Most City of Dublin parish registers are free online at:
http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/
[There are also Carlow, Cork & Kerry OPRs there too]

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Probably relevant bit

Search for Geo Kirkham at http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
Next click on page # link to see who else is on page - one expects his bride to be there too

Marriages Sep 1903 (>99%)
Carey Patrick Manchester 8d 466
GRAHAM Mary Manchester 8d 466
Higgins Mary Manchester 8d 466
KIRKHAM George Manchester 8d 466

Now it's not clear which Mary George wed
Incidentally, if I click on the Manchester link, then the more info "here" link, it tells me the villages, etc that were in Manchester RD.

Now, although most people buy BMD.certs from the GRO, one can also buy them from the appropriate local office (and m.certs from the appropriate minister if they're in his current register)
Some local RDs have their index on-line - see:
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/local_bmd

We're interested here in
http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1903
Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
KIRKHAM George GRAHAM Mary Manchester Register Office or Registrar Attended Manchester MCR_RM/155/99

After 1898, this probably is either a rego office marr, or an RC marr.
RCs weren't authorized to keep registers in England until the 1980s, so the registrar would have to attend an RC marr and have the couple sign his register.

If it had been in a CofE rego, there are transcriptions of some of these at:

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/indexp.html

There's also a partly indexed collection on the FS site whose URL I gave above.
The collection's called:
England, Lancashire – Cheshire – Yorkshire Parish Registers, 1603-1992
but, in spite of the title, it's really Greater Manchester.
It's worth checking to see if the church is there, then backing up to search the index.
If there's no hits, you'll have to browse, but the LancsBMD ref is handy - the last bit of the ref is the entry #
(Some other indexes, it's the page #, but it's usually the entry # - explaining how the brides and grooms can be paired off.)
