Hi I have just found that my grandfather had an older sister Lucy who was (presumably) born in 1859 as she was baptised on 1 January 1860.
I have tracked her in the census of 1861 when she was with her mother Lucy (Puttock) living with her grandmother and in the 1871 census when she was living with her aunt and uncle William and Emma Bridger (Puttock).
But then she disappears and I can find no trace of her in census records, marriages or death registrations.
If anyone could help solve this mystery for me I would be most grateful.
Cheers John

I was wondering if Lucy Snr perhaps remarried and little Lucy took on stepfather's name?
I have found Lucy Snr as a servant in 1871 and she is a widow.

If John returns and explains who his grandfather was, it might make things a lot clearer.

We really need some info from John as this doesn't add up!
John's grandfather 'would appear' to have the surname Walters BUT I don't then see how, if he had the same surname as his sister Lucy, they would be 'half' siblings, unless Lucy had a child with another man while she still had the same surname.
I had seen the Croker marriage and Lucy in the hospital in 1881 but there should be a child around somewhere who I cannot see?
I am sure we are on the right track but could well be wasting our time without some more info.

In the marriage found William Walters is a soldier, so if overseas is not showing on censuses, so children not obvious?
Added: John has a William Walters, 1861, born Guildford Surrey in his tree.
And he has a previous thread about his family as I have been in contact with him before.

Previous information found: William doesn't appear in the censuses in the decades when he could have married his first wife, I suspect because he was a soldier and was overseas in India and Burma with his regiment (Queens Royal Regiment). He does appear in the 1901 census and he was out of the army at that time having served his 21 years. By that time his first wife was dead and he did not have the care of his children by them.

You are all terrifying! You are so good and so quick!
But just to clarify or perhaps restate what you already know.
My grandfather was William Walters and he was born in 1861 in Shere Surrey. His mother was Lucy Puttock but Lucy's husband and William's father was by then dead having died in May of that year. Just to make matters a little more difficult he too was a William Walters and a soldier in the Grenadier Guards.
I had just found out that the Lucy Walters the subject of my question was born in 1859 and was my grandfather's older sister and William and Lucy's first born.
The marriage of a Lucy Walters to Zebedee Croker in 1865 is intriguing. Particularly as in the 1881 census she says she was born in Shere Surrey. But it is difficult to reconcile her with William's widow as a Lucy Walters, a widow, appears in the 1871 census as a cook for a family in Suffolk and her son William (grandfather) was apparently boarding with the Overington family found by allotment. If she did marry Zebedee why was her son not with her?
It seems the mystery of Lucy Walters born 1859 continues...
But thank you all for your wonderful researches and help.
And if you want a real challenge try and identify my grandfather's William grandfather who was identified by Lucy's husband in their marriage certificate as one Richard Walters a shoemaker. As far as I can establish his mother Ann Walters was never married and there was no Richard Walters. But there was a Richard Cock who was a shoemaker who lived in the next door hamlet to Ann.....
Thanks again for all your help.
Cheers John
