Janice,
Have you checked what records they hold for this workhouse, if they have the addmission records this may clarify things a little regarding them being a family and perhaps their circumstances at their arrival. As you have an approx date when they were there it would be easy for the Archivist at the record office to check.

I've hit a brick wall tracing my g/g-grandmother Annie HOLFORD/HALFORD/HULFORD prior to her marriage in 1879, even the marriage record is a bit uncertain.
I have my g/g-grandfather Joseph Heath married to Annie b:1859, Chesterfield, Derbys. on the 1881 census, the 1891 census shows them with a brother of Annie's living with them called Henry Holford b:1873, Chesterfield, Derbys.
The transcribed info of the marriage record for Joseph Heath shows Annis Holford, marriage 1879, Rotherham, Yorks. but the original does not look like Annie/Annis to me, more something beginning with the letter 'L' so before ordering their marriage certificate i wanted to try and find out more about my Annie Holford. Unfortunately the only information i'm coming up with for 1871 leads me to the Chesterfield Workhouse where i found numerous HALFORDS (Charlotte b:1841, Ann b:1858, Emma b:1861, Mary b:1865, Harriet b:1866, Charlotte b:1869, all Chesterfield, Debys.).
The 1881 census gives me the workhouse again when looking for her brother Henry with the surname HULFORD along with Charlotte b:1841, Emma b:1861, Harriet b:1866, Charlotte b:1869 all Chesterfield Derbys.
If Ann from the 1871 census is my Annie then her disappearance on the 1881 makes sense with the marriage in 1879, all though how she got from the workhouse in Chesterfield to being married in Rotherham i do not know.
So, going on the possibility this was my Ann with her family that would possibly make Charlotte b:1841her mother, on checking for a marriage i found a Henry Holford married to a Charlotte Searston, 1857, Chesterfield, Derbys....this also fits in with my Annie's age and the age of the Ann from the workhouse.
However, the only Charlotte Searston i can find is listed with a Thorpe family and another Searston on the 1851 & 1861...so that just messed up that theory!
Basically i'm going round in circles now, i've checked both Derbyshire and Yorkshire listings and all i keep getting is the info above. If anyone has or can help find any info on a Annie HOLFORD/HALFORD/HULFORD b:c1859, Chesterfield, Derbyshire with a brother Henry b:1873...prior to the 1881 census...please let me know, going a little :-S now! :)
