I want to find the whereabouts of my great grandfather Samuel Mason in 1861 & 1871. He was born in 1856 in South Shields County Durham. His parents were David and Margaret Mason. Can anyone help? Thanks Larraine Nicholson

thank everyone for taking the time to help me find my great grandfather in 1861. Margaret Mason is definately Samuel's mother as I have his birth certificate. Susannah Whiting must have been lodging with Margaret in 1861. I have already got the 1871 and 1881 census for Margaret and daughter Mary Anne. With regards to Samuel's whereabouts in 1871 he would be 14 years old so he may have been at sea or visiting his Scottish grandparents. The listing on the 1881 census is Samuel he married Ann Isabella Blenkinsop in November of 1879 As a point of interest Samuel and his father David both became master mariners. Just one point, the way that the census information is given .........

............... indicates that Margaret is lodging with Susannah ................ the head of house (or wife of head) is always listed first.


and hence one reason why an unthinking transcriber made this mistake:-

In fact, when one actually looks at the census image (!!!!!) .................. the two women are NOT LIVING TOGETHER!!!


They are next door neighbours:-

Margaret Mason ................. Address:- 4 Havelock Street


The two households are separated on the image by a double black line, in addition to the two different house addresses.
