Did Ellen Hurrell Emigrate

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

I wouldnt rule out the 1911, Ellen was not likely to have completed the census form and the person who did may well have assumed that she was from north Devon

In fact, everyone listed has an 'actual' place of birth rather than just the county, Ellen may not have been around to tell the person filling the form in, exactly where she was from

Just checked the marriages and deaths for any Ellen Hurrell' in Oz........nothing to match your girl

Oh dear, I thought we had found her but that 1911 entry records a North Devon birth and unfortunately Ugborough and Ivybridge are in South Devon. I'll continue to look.

That is very likely to be her in the 1911 census and as you say eliminates the Australian emigration. Her sister Alice had in fact moved towards Exeter and married a Policeman in that area in 1908 so that would in fact tie in nicely. Better put my hand n my pocket and order up the death certificate as suggested.

Many thanks to you all for all the help provided.

Nice one Dea, that looks like her which discounts the trip to Oz

So, it might be worth buying that death certificate that I posted earlier?

Edit: I have looked at that shipping record for Aug 1910 and I cant see an age listed? If the Ellen Hurrell on that ship was 31, then there are a couple of births that would match for her being born in 1879c.............so that could also rule her out as being 'your' girl too

Anyone got access to the 1911, I dont think Ancestry have them transcribed yet for teh Devon region?

Thought we might be able to pin her down on the census

Im not convinced that she went to Oz, there are no records showing on Ancestry that point to her, using her mother and fathers names etc

Buddah,

How did you come to the age of 31 only the Find My Past website suggest the travelling Ellen Hurrell was born in 1885 + or - 2 years. it is obviously the same voyage.

There were no marriages in New South Wales for Ellen Hurrell.

There was another death of Ellen Hurrell, but she was born in N.S.W.

Gins,

Her parentage is a little doubtful which has been part of the problem but her mother was definately Selina Hurrell, born 1848 in Ugborough, Devon. I suspect her father was probably my 2 X great grandfather, John Brooking, born 1837 in Diptford, Devon although I cannot and will not be able to confirm that he was her father for sure.

Her birth was indeed recorded as Ellen Brooking Hurrell in the Mar Q of 1885 in the Totnes dist and she was bap on 7 Oct 1885 at the church of St John Ivybridge with her mother recorded as Selina Hurrell but with no father recorded.

I believe the 1901 has her mis transcribed as Ellen Harvill born in Ivybridge and working for a widowed Catherine Hicks who is the proprieter of the Kings Arms Hotel at 1 Fore Street Ivybridge.

That is the very last sighting of her and I can find nothing on the 1911 census which makes me think that she may be the Ellen on the 1910 passenger list.

I think like the UK Registers, the Australian Electoral Register only provides name, address and occupation.

I may have gone some way in ovecoming a long standing brick wall in my search for a Ellen Hurrell who was born on 3 Jan 1885 in Ugborough or Ivybridge, Devon.

I have found an outgoing passenger list which records an Ellen Hurrell sailing from London to Sydney Australia on the ship "Otway" departing London on 24 Jun 1910, born abt 1885 and recorded as a Domestic, she may well be the Ellen who has escapeed me for so long.

Would anyone have additional coverage which may confirm who this particular Ellen was, such as the Australian census returns ?.

Many thanks
Mo
